Energy Cycle and Energy Cycle Edge go next-gen on Xbox Series X|S and PS5

Five years have passed since the original Energy Cycle released on Xbox One, with it fast approaching three years since the sequel, Energy Cycle Edge, did similar. Now though it’s time for those same games to go and hit the next-gen, with Xbox Series X|S and PS5 enhancements helping push the same puzzling affairs to an all new level.

Available to purchase right now on Xbox Series X|S and PS5 is Energy Cycle, with Energy Cycle Edge arriving in exactly 24 hours from now, on Oct 21st.

Both games work along similar lines – as you would expect. Energy Cycle lays the foundations by delivering up a game field full of different coloured cells. Clicking on these amends their colour some more and it’s up to you to work adjacent cells to match up with any neighbours. Turning the field difficult colours certainly seems an easy task, but in reality it proves to be an altogether different ball game.

Throw in the fact that multiple game modes are included too – Puzzle, Time Attack, Infinite – and for the £2.49 asking price, Energy Cycle on Xbox Series X|S and PS5 should have more than enough about it. What makes it more appealing is that those behind Energy Cycle – Sometimes You – are promising to give access to the upgraded versions free of charge if you have previously purchased the game. Unfortunately there is no Smart Deliver available on Xbox, but you should be able to hunt the new Series X|S version down from the Xbox Store and add it manually.

It’s a similar story for Energy Cycle Edge – even when taking into account the slightly more expensive £4.19 asked. This works as a standalone sequel, pretty much delivering more puzzles to complement what is found in the original game. 44 more stages, a Random Colors mode, a Classic Cells option and a new soundtrack are pretty much all that differentiates this from the other and so it may well be worth taking a punt with the original game first, then jumping in here should you feel the need. Expect to find a 50% discount on Energy Cycle Edge if you are making the next-gen leap.

It’s probably also worth you taking in our full reviews of both Energy Cycle and Energy Cycle Edge on Xbox One from back in the day. We’re not really sure what a next-gen upgrade can really do to two games which are so simple in visual terms, but we’ll look to give them both a go on Xbox Series X|S and update you with full next-gen thoughts when we can.

Energy Cycle Game Description:

‘Energy Cycle’ – new puzzle game from the developers of ‘Energy Balance’. When you click each cell on the game field – it changes color, and the colors of adjacent cells horizontally and vertically. Your task to bring all the cells to the same color. Sounds pretty easy, but try to do it! ‘Energy Cycle’ feature three modes for every taste: – Puzzle (Without timer. Pre-designed puzzles.) – Time Attack (With timer and scoring. Random puzzles.) – Infinite Play (Without timer. Like ‘Time Attack’, but you can play it forever.)

Energy Cycle Edge Game Description: ‘

Energy Cycle Edge’ is the sequel to the puzzle game ‘Energy Cycle’. The main idea is the same: when you activate each cell in the game field, it changes the colors of the cell and any adjacent cells in a straight line. Each cell switches between three different colors, and your task is to make them all match the same color. In ‘Energy Cycle Edge’, most part of puzzles are three-dimensional, so you’ll need to monitor the changes of colors within several linked layers, adding a new facet to the familiar gameplay.
