Escape From Ever After brings Paper Mario-style RPG action and corporate satire to Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and PC

Fairytales were never meant to involve office politics, coffee machines, and corporate ladder-climbing – yet here we are with Escape From Ever After.

Out now on Xbox Series X|S, Play Anywhere, PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch, priced at ÂŁ20.99, it delivers a wonderfully weird adventure RPG where storybook heroes take on capitalism itself.

Inspired by the classic Paper Mario games, this vibrant RPG flips fantasy tropes on their head, blending turn-based battles, sharp humour, and a surprisingly timely narrative about profit, power, and who really owns the story.

When Dragons Get Desk Jobs

At the heart of Escape From Ever After is Flynt Buckler, a traditional fairytale adventurer who storms his nemesis Tinder’s dragon-filled castle… only to find it has been converted into a soul-crushing corporate headquarters.

The reason? Storybooks are now big business.

A real-world conglomerate known as Ever After Inc.™ has discovered that fairytale worlds are packed with untapped resources, cheap labour, and endless profit potential. With Tinder’s castle serving as their base of operations, they are rapidly colonising every storybook they can get their hands on.

With few options left, Flynt teams up with his former enemy Tinder, taking a job inside the corporation to dismantle it from within – one office task at a time.

A Paper-Inspired RPG With Bite

Escape From Ever After wears its influences proudly, offering snappy, turn-based combat that rewards timing, creativity, and smart use of abilities. Perfectly-timed action commands let Flynt finish battles with style, while badges, items, and party members open up new strategies throughout the adventure.

Battles are fast-paced and flexible, with every party member bringing unique skills that can be upgraded and customised. Whether you prefer raw damage, clever support abilities, or tactical debuffs, the system constantly encourages you to mix things up.

And one of Escape From Ever After’s greatest strengths is its sheer variety. Each storybook world introduces new mechanics, characters, and themes, ensuring the experience never feels stale.

Office Politics Meet Fantasy Adventure

You see, one moment you may be solving a noir-style murder mystery, the next you’re fleeing Lovecraftian horrors or clashing with villainous versions of The Three Little Pigs as they bulldoze a forest for real estate development.

Between dungeon-crawling and boss fights, players can engage in office banter, help coworkers, decorate their workspace, and slowly climb the corporate ladder – all while plotting Ever After Inc.’s downfall from the inside.

A Confident Launch With Proven Momentum

Published by HypeTrain Digital and developed by Sleepy Castle Studio alongside Wing-It! Creative, Escape From Ever After arrives with strong momentum. Its standalone prologue, Escape From Ever After: Onboarding, has been available for free on the Xbox Store for a while and should be seen as a promising sign for the full release.

Of course, we’ll let you know how the full game fares in review – we’re hands-on with the Xbox version of Escape From Ever After as we type…

It’s just a shame that Escape From Ever After is not part of your Game Pass subscription service at launch.

With its sharp writing, inventive combat, and constantly shifting gameplay ideas, Escape From Ever After feels like a fairytale RPG that genuinely has something to say – while still being an absolute joy to play. Grab a download from the usual stores, like the Xbox Store for PC, Play Anywhere and Xbox Series X|S.

A launch trailer is also available, offering a colourful glimpse into its corporate fairytale chaos. Watch it, please…

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
