Escape The Backrooms – One Of PC’s Biggest Horror Hits Joins Game Pass

-

2026's Best Games

Escape The Backrooms builds its terror around something strange: endless yellow corridors, flickering lights, unsettling silence, and the constant feeling that you’re not supposed to be there.

After becoming a viral sensation on PC (Steam) and racking up millions of players, Escape The Backrooms has finally arrived on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Better still, Xbox players can jump in through Game Pass Ultimate, Game Pass Premium and PC Game Pass from day one. There’s Play Anywhere support too.

Just don’t expect a relaxing evening.

The Internet’s Favourite Horror Rabbit Hole

If you’ve spent any time online over the last few years, chances are you’ve stumbled across the Backrooms. We’ve had a ton of games inspired by the vibe release on Xbox alone.

What began as a creepypasta evolved into a full-blown internet phenomenon, fuelled by unsettling images of endless office spaces, abandoned corridors and liminal environments that somehow feel both familiar and completely wrong. Escape The Backrooms takes that concept and turns it into a full co-op horror experience.

Players must explore more than 30 unique levels inspired by Backrooms lore, searching for exits while avoiding the many horrors lurking in the shadows. The catch? Getting lost is incredibly easy, and survival is far from guaranteed.

Bring Friends. You’ll Need Them

While Escape The Backrooms can be played solo, it feels very much designed around multiplayer panic. Up to four players can explore together online, communicating through proximity voice chat as they search for clues and desperately try not to become separated.

That last part is harder than it sounds.

You see, the Backrooms are intentionally confusing, twisting players through eerie hallways, abandoned pools, strange hotels and increasingly bizarre locations. Wander too far from your group and you might find yourself completely alone when something starts moving in the darkness. To make matters worse, the entities hunting you can hear your conversations and so sometimes the smartest thing to do is stop talking entirely.

One of the reasons Escape The Backrooms has remained popular since launching in Early Access back in 2022 is the sheer variety of its environments. The iconic yellow rooms are here, of course, but they’re only the beginning. As players progress deeper into the Backrooms, they’ll encounter increasingly surreal locations and uncover hidden areas that expand the mystery further.

Console players are also getting the complete experience from day one, including all content added to the PC version since its original launch, alongside full cross-platform support between Xbox, PlayStation and PC.

The Horror Doesn’t End When You Escape

If surviving the standard experience isn’t enough, Escape The Backrooms also includes Nightmare Mode. One death. Full restart. No second chances.

Should that appeal, you’ll find that Escape The Backrooms is available right now on Xbox Series X|S (Xbox Store), PlayStation 5 and PC for £9.99, while Game Pass subscribers can jump straight in without spending a penny extra.

Whether you’re already familiar with Backrooms lore or simply fancy a horror game that feels a little different from the norm, this is one of the most intriguing arrivals on Game Pass this month.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
