RoadOut does not seem interested in staying in one lane for very long. One moment you are tearing across a post-apocalyptic wasteland in an armed vehicle, the next you are crawling through puzzle-filled dungeons blasting enemies with twin-stick combat. From there, you can throw in some faction wars, cybernetic upgrades and destruction derby racing. Yeah, there’s plenty going on.
Now available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam, DANGEN ENTERTAINMENT and Rastrolabs Game Studio have launched a retro-styled action RPG that mixes driving, dungeon exploration and heavy synthwave energy inside a ruined world ruled by artificial intelligence.

Welcome To The Dead Zone
The world of RoadOut takes place after a cataclysm leaves civilisation shattered beneath the control of a powerful A.I. What remains is The Dead Zone – an artificial biome populated by rival factions, mercenaries and anyone ruthless enough to survive another day.
Players step into the role of Claire, a hired gun making a living through black market contracts involving sabotage, deliveries and murder. Along the way, she becomes tangled in a larger mystery tied directly to the origins of the A.I. itself.
Driving, Combat And Dungeon Crawling
RoadOut is constantly shifting between different gameplay styles. Out on the roads, players explore the wasteland by car, taking on jobs, joining factions and racing through dangerous stretches of desert while hostile gangs attempt to tear them apart.
Once on foot, the game changes into a twin-stick action RPG complete with dungeon exploration, melee combat, ranged attacks and puzzle-solving sections built around rotating environments that appear 2D but actually exist in 3D space.
Build Claire – And Her Ride
Customisation also plays a major role throughout the experience. Claire can be upgraded through body mods, cybernetics and skill trees, while her vehicle can be outfitted with weapons and improvements designed to survive the increasingly hostile conditions inside The Dead Zone.
Crafting systems allow players to create weapons, items and recovery tools, while races and combat arenas provide additional ways to earn rewards and test upgraded builds.
A Post-Apocalyptic RPG With Plenty Of Personality
Between its synthwave soundtrack, retro-inspired visuals and genre-hopping gameplay systems, RoadOut looks determined to carve out its own identity rather than follow a safer formula.
There are shades of old-school vehicular combat games here, mixed with dungeon crawlers, action RPG mechanics and a punk sci-fi aesthetic. For those looking for something a little messier, louder and stranger than the average post-apocalyptic adventure, RoadOut could end up being an interesting ride. Just expect plenty of explosions along the way.
You’ll find RoadOut on the Xbox Store, priced at ÂŁ12.49, for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. It’s also on Steam, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.
