There’s something unsettling about tall grass. You can’t quite see what’s hiding within it, only hear the rustle before it’s too late. That tension sits at the very core of Fear Tall Grass, a newly announced dark fantasy roguelite that blends creature collecting with strategic, dice-driven progression.
Coming to PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch, this new project from Entalto Publishing and Forgotten Bastions looks to carve out its own space in an increasingly crowded genre.

A World Consumed By Vilekin
At the heart of Fear Tall Grass is a bleak, dying world.
Civilisation is being overrun by Vilekin, twisted creatures that have pushed humanity to the brink. Players step into the role of Gray, the last steward of the Oathguard, tasked with venturing into the unknown and finding a way to fight back.
That means doing the unthinkable. Instead of simply destroying these creatures, you’ll need to learn to tame and command them, turning the enemy into your greatest asset.
Strategy Meets Roguelite Momentum
Fear Tall Grass mixes several ideas together, but its core loop is easy to grasp. Each run is built around a board-like progression system, where movement is dictated by a two-dice roll. Every step reshapes the battlefield, forcing players to adapt their strategy on the fly.
Combat itself leans into autobattler mechanics, where your team composition, positioning and preparation matter just as much as moment-to-moment decisions.
Key systems include:
- Managing Command Points to trigger abilities at crucial moments
- Swapping creatures mid-fight based on elemental strengths
- Building a balanced team capable of handling unpredictable threats
Building Power Across Runs
Like any good roguelite, progress doesn’t end when a run does.
Between expeditions, players return to the Sanctuary of Light, where permanent upgrades, crafting and progression systems come into play. Over time, you’ll strengthen both Gray and your growing roster of creatures, preparing for tougher encounters ahead.
There is also a clever twist in how you interact with the world itself. By clearing dangerous tiles, you can reclaim land and construct buildings, gaining buffs that carry through each run.
Over 100 Creatures To Command
Creature variety looks set to be a major draw. In fact, Fear Tall Grass features over 100 Vilekin, spread across six elemental paths:
- Hydro
- Pyro
- Nature
- Physical
- Volt
- Rock
Each brings different strengths and weaknesses, encouraging experimentation and careful planning when assembling your team.
One To Watch In The Roguelite Space
Fear Tall Grass isn’t short on ideas. By combining dice-based movement, autobattler combat and creature collection within a dark fantasy setting, it has the potential to stand out from the crowd. The question will be how well those systems come together in practice.
For now, it’s an intriguing reveal. One that trades bright colours for creeping dread, and predictable paths for uncertain steps into the unknown. And if the name is anything to go by, you might want to think twice before wandering off the path.
We’ll keep you updated. But check out the Steam page if you want to know more.
