Now on Xbox and PC – Runes Quest

Sometimes, the simplest adventures are the ones that make you stop and think. Runes Quest is a new puzzle game arriving on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC for £4.19, challenging players to guide a stranded knight home through a series of increasingly tricky puzzles.

With cute visuals, relaxing music and 30 levels to work through, this is a small-scale adventure built around taking your time and finding the right move.

A Knight With A Puzzle To Solve

Runes Quest takes its inspiration from the classic Sokoban puzzler, where careful movement and planning are essential. The goal is straightforward: help the knight find his way back home. Getting there, however, means navigating a collection of obstacles and working out how the different pieces of each level fit together.

Buttons, grates, keys, runes, boxes, pits and traps all feature, giving players plenty to consider as they work through the puzzles. A misplaced move could leave the knight with a problem to solve before he can make any further progress.

Light And Dark, With 30 Levels To Explore

The adventure is split across two biomes, one light and one dark, each brought to life with the promise of cute graphics and a relaxing musical backdrop. We’ll find out if that is the case in full review soon.

With 30 levels in total, Runes Quest offers a focused puzzle experience that puts thought and patience ahead of frantic action. The combination of environmental obstacles and puzzle elements should keep players looking for solutions as they help the knight make his way home.

At £4.19, Runes Quest is a modestly priced puzzle outing for Xbox and PC, with a clear objective and a collection of challenges to work through. Sometimes, getting home really is all about knowing which box to push first.

You’ll find the game on the Xbox Store in three flavours – optimised for Xbox Series X|S, playable on Xbox One, or for Windows PC.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
