From Mega Cat Studios comes a new entry in the Five Nights at Freddy’s universe, subtitled Into the Pit.

The first time I played Five Nights at Freddy’s, I almost had a heart attack as various animatronic monsters attempted to get me, so seeing that Into the Pit was advertised as a survival game made my poor ticker feel a bit calmer.

But was this just the calm before the storm, or had Freddy gone soft? There’s only one way to find out if Freddy has decided to mellow out in his old age… Are you ready to brave the Pit?

Ready to go Into the Pit?

The Pit in question is found in a run-down pizzeria where Oswald is dropped off every day by his dad. Hearing rumours of an off-limits ball pit, Oswald decides it’s the perfect place to hide and worry his father. Kids, right? Once Oswald gets into the Pit, he’s transported back in time to the heyday of the pizzeria. And can you guess which pizzeria it is? That’s right, it’s Freddy Fazbear’s! Oswald manages to escape back to the ball pit and finds himself back in his own time, reunited with his father… Or is he? I won’t spoil anything, but the story pays homage to the FNAF universe and lore, and it doesn’t feel like a cheap cash-in. Full marks here!

Next, let’s talk about the presentation. If you enjoy pixel art and retro graphics, you’ll feel right at home here with Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit. The game’s visuals are impressive, from Oswald’s slightly pudgy appearance to the scary robots roaming in the dark. Everything contributes to the spooky atmosphere. This is a game that feels perfect for Halloween, adding to the spooky atmosphere, whilst the different locations and time zones all have their own unique look and feel. Everything is viewed from a side perspective, and helpful markers indicate interactive elements like hiding places.

Sound is a crucial element in these games, and this one is no exception. The sound design ramps up the tension as you hide from the monsters; their growls and other sound cues are as scary as the visuals. Overall, the presentation is excellent.

Can you complete the tasks?

But what about the gameplay? Into the Pit is a survival game where you’re given various tasks to complete. Some tasks are simple, like finding the ball pit or playing an arcade game with a child you meet in the past. Other tasks are more complex, like getting your dad’s phone number and calling your mother. The multi-stage objectives add to the challenge and replayability, as there’s more than one way to approach the game.

For example, I decided to deviate from the suggested path and ran out of the pizzeria as soon as I could, which led to one of the endings. I’m not sure if it’s a good ending, but at least I completed the game!

Part of the fun is going back and trying different things to achieve different endings. While you’re exploring, you also need to avoid the rampaging mascots that make things more challenging. Whether you hide, use noise traps to distract them, or think on your feet to survive the night, you’ll need to be strategic. Finding clues, useful items, and knowing when to use them are all crucial for survival.

A great addition to the series

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit is a great addition to the series. The gameplay is engaging and terrifying, and the multiple endings encourage replayability. The game offers a sense of discovery as you find secrets, save your friends and family, and make choices that affect your survival.

If you’re looking for a scary game (and those mascots will never not be scary), then Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit is a great choice.
