After months of speculation following its initial reveal, Forza Horizon 6 now has a confirmed release date – and the Horizon Festival is officially heading to Japan this spring.
Playground Games has announced that the next mainline entry in the beloved open-world racing series will launch on May 19th, with Early Access kicking off a few days earlier (May 15th) for Premium Edition owners.
First unveiled back in September 2025, when Playground confirmed the series’ long-awaited move to Japan, this latest update not only locks in the release window but also sheds fresh light on the game’s setting, structure, and ambition as Horizon aims higher than ever.
Forza Horizon 6 launches on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Steam, and day one with Game Pass Ultimate, with PlayStation 5 following later in 2026. It’ll have full Play Anywhere support too.
A New Beginning For The Horizon Festival
Unlike previous entries, Forza Horizon 6 doesn’t drop players straight into superstardom. Instead, Playground Games is deliberately resetting the fantasy.
You begin your journey not as a racing icon, but as a tourist arriving in Japan with nothing more than a dream of joining the Horizon Festival. According to Design Director Torben Ellert via the Xbox Developer Direct and Newswire, this shift was intentional.
“So many of us love that idea of going to a place you don’t know, eager to discover it,” Ellert explains. “You’re attending the Horizon Festival as a fan, with a dream to take part – and that felt like a great way to frame this open-door experience.”
It’s a tonal change that immediately sets Horizon 6 apart from its UK and Mexico-based predecessors, and one that reinforces the sense of discovery at the heart of this new entry.
Japan Takes Centre Stage In Horizon’s Most Ambitious Map Yet
Forza Horizon 6 transports players to a condensed yet richly detailed version of Japan, blending neon-lit cityscapes with serene rural passes and dramatic mountain roads.
Tokyo serves as the beating heart of the map, featuring Horizon’s largest-ever urban space, complete with dense verticality, industrial docklands, and iconic landmarks like Shibuya Crossing and Tokyo Tower. Elsewhere, winding suburban streets, alpine roads, and hidden shortcuts ensure variety across every drive.
Rather than recreating Japan mile-for-mile, Playground focused on capturing its feel.
“It’s less about accuracy and more about the experience,” Ellert notes. “It’s about what’s revealed when you turn a corner – and how that feels behind the wheel.”
Celebrating Japanese Car Culture
Much like in Forza Horizon 5, car culture sits at the core of Forza Horizon 6, with over 550 real-world vehicles available at launch, including beloved JDM classics, modern performance machines, and extreme Forza Edition builds.
Players will encounter Touge Battles, Horizon Legends, and authentic story threads rooted in Japan’s automotive heritage, all while enjoying enhanced engine audio, updated steering animations, and up to 540 degrees of wheel rotation for supported setups.
Two close companions join you on your journey – one a motorsport fanatic, the other a Japanese car builder – helping ground the experience in both outsider wonder and insider knowledge.
Progression Reimagined With Discovery At Its Heart
Alongside Horizon’s familiar wristband system, a brand-new Collection Journal adds a second layer of progression. Inspired by Japan’s stamp-collecting traditions, the Journal records landmarks, murals, discoveries, and personal moments from across the map.
“It’s a visual representation of your journey,” Ellert says. “A collection of your own specific experiences in Japan.”
Exploration now feeds directly into progression, rewarding curiosity just as much as podium finishes.
Homes, Estates And Building Your Own Space
Returning player houses once again act as fast-travel hubs and showcase garages, but Horizon 6 goes further with The Estate – a large, customisable mountain valley inspired by Japan’s abandoned Akiya properties.
Here, players can freely build structures, tracks, and social spaces, using credits earned throughout the game world. Build something, tear it down, and rebuild again – your vision, your rules.
It’s a feature designed to make creativity feel earned, not free.
A More Social Horizon Than Ever
Multiplayer remains seamless and ever-present. Players can:
- Join Car Meets inspired by Japan’s legendary Daikoku gatherings
- Race together in Spec Championships and Time Attack Circuits
- Share designs, tunes, and events
- Build co-op experiences anywhere in Japan using the upgraded EventLab CoLab tools
Classic modes like The Eliminator and Hide & Seek also return, ensuring there’s always something happening on the festival calendar. And we’re hoping that means the return of the much loved Weekly Challenges too.
Forza Horizon 6 Premium Edition And Early Access Explained
Players eager to hit the roads of Japan ahead of launch can opt for the Forza Horizon 6 Premium Edition, which unlocks the full game early and bundles together a range of post-launch content.
The Premium Edition grants Early Access from May 15th, four days ahead of the standard release, allowing players to begin their Horizon journey before the festival officially opens its gates on May 19.
In addition to Early Access, the Premium Edition includes future expansions and bonus content, making it the most complete way to experience Forza Horizon 6 from day one – particularly for long-term Horizon fans planning to stick with the Festival well beyond launch.
