Coming on like a cross between Lost Vikings and Lemmings, Goroons is a co-op platformer with an emphasis on puzzling. It’s all about getting from A to B, and rearranging the level in-between to get there. And it’s available right now on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
Each of your gruesome-looking Goroons has a specialist power, whether that be forming bridges, pushing blocks, jumping or being so heavy that you can lower platforms (we’re definitely that kind of Goroon). Your task is to use them in the right combination to get where you’re going.
What separates Goroons from similar games is the emphasis on co-op. That doesn’t mean that perhaps two people could play if they wanted (although, they can); it means that Goroons has been designed from the ground up to be played by four players at the same time. You get four Goroons, and you need to use their powers individually, and sometimes simultaneously, to get to the exit. It really has been designed for friends.
There’s a lovely claymation-styling to the Goroons, and their levels are all neon and garish, making this look like a good one for the family to enjoy. The caveat here being that developers Epopeia Games are emphasising the difficulty on offer here, so it might take several tries to get each level right.
It comes packaged with a story, but we’re not entirely sure if we’ve got it right: the Goroons are chasing after their guardian princess who has been kidnapped by a golden arrow. It’s not your conventional choice for a villain, but we’ll go along with it.
Goroons looks like a team-building exercise in a cartoony puzzle form, but a dozen times more interesting than we just made it sound.
Goroons is out now on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S and starts at £4.19 from the Xbox Store, with a reduction to £3.77 for launch. You can also purchase it as part of an Epopeia Puzzle bundle alongside cube-based puzzle game IIN for £6.69 (reduced to £5.35 right now). Goroons is also out on PC via Steam.
