Goat Simulator: Remastered Review

Latest Reviews

I fondly recall my time with the original Goat Simulator, even going so far as to unlock all the achievements, including the infamous “Flappy Goat” achievement that tested my patience.

Now, over a decade since its launch, the inevitable remaster has arrived. Coffee Stain Studios, Fishlabs, and Coffee Stain North have unleashed Goat Simulator: Remastered upon the world. But does this remaster offer anything new, or is it simply a rehash of familiar territory? Let’s delve into the chaotic world of goats and find out.

The madness of Goat Simulator is Remastered

I was most apprehensive about the remaster’s presentation. The original Goat Simulator was, to put it mildly, janky. However, this jankiness was part of its charm. Discovering and exploiting the game’s physics-based glitches was almost as entertaining as completing the intended objectives. It’s good then (at least I think it’s good) that most of these glitches remain intact in Goat Simulator: Remastered, now rendered in glorious, albeit still absurd, HD visuals. From the moment I encountered a character submerged waist-deep in the pavement, I knew this remaster stayed true to the original’s spirit.

The updated graphics are visually improved but retain the same chaotic charm, whilst the sound design is similarly faithful, with the iconic “baa” button, amusing impact and explosion sounds, and a decent soundtrack.

While each section of the game has objectives to complete, there isn’t a cohesive narrative to be found in Goat Simulator. Even the MMO Simulator DLC is filled with nonsensical missions. Therefore, this review won’t delve into a deep analysis of the story. However, I can elaborate on the sheer volume of content included in this remaster.

Tons of content

Obviously Goat Simulator: Remastered bundles the base game with all previously released DLC, offering a substantial amount of goat-themed mayhem.

There’s the base game of Goat Simulator itself, the game that started it all in which you’ll unleash chaos upon a small town as a goat, licking, headbutting, and even sacrificing humans to achieve your goals. From there, we head to Goat City Bay, providing access to a new map reminiscent of GTA: Vice City, offering more of the same chaotic fun.

After that we get Goat MMO, which is a parody of the MMO genre, complete with absurd chat logs and six playable goat classes with unique abilities, and then a bit of GoatZ – A zombie survival experience where you initiate an outbreak and then attempt to survive. The plan is to find food, hide from zombies, and explore a post-apocalyptic world.

Further to that is PAYDAY, something that is fully inspired by the Payday franchise, as you choose from four goat characters and embark on heists, spending your ill-gotten gains on new items or gambling it away. There’s also Waste of Space playing out as a sci-fi mashup inspired by Star Wars, Mass Effect, and Doctor Who, whilst Buck to School was originally a mobile-exclusive DLC that is now available on consoles. Ride the school bus from the base game to access new missions and playable goats.

Still very much like Marmite

The various DLC sections are accessible from the main menu, allowing you to jump straight into your preferred goat-themed adventure. You can also use any unlocked goat skins across all game modes.

Formulating a conclusion for Goat Simulator: Remastered is tricky, as it’s a game that elicits strong reactions, running a bit Marmite-y. You either love its absurdity or find it utterly ridiculous. Fortunately, I fall into the former camp, appreciating both Marmite and Goat Simulator. What is not up for debate though is that Goat Simulator: Remastered retains the original’s chaotic charm while enhancing the visuals and bundling all the DLC.

My only complaint is the simplified achievement list, which distributes the 1000 Gamerscore across the entire package, eliminating the challenging “Flappy Goat” achievement. I believe everyone should endure that particular trial!
