Got your Xbox One early? Looks like you won’t be able to use it for much.

2026's Best Games

There are a few Xbox One consoles already out in the wild, but if you were one of the lucky ones that received yours, unfortunately you won’t be able to use it for much.

Microsoft have told Kotaku that anyone receiving their One due to a mixup with a retail partners system, will be stuck with a pretty basic box until nearer the launch date. They told them:

Due to a retail partner’s system issue, a very small number of Xbox One consoles were shipped to consumers before the November 22 street date. We’re pleased to see the initial response to Xbox One has been so positive, but given we are still putting the finishing touches on our games, UI and online services, as well as confidential partner and media agreements, these console units will be restricted from connecting to Xbox Live until closer to our launch date.

And seeing as a download and a connection to Xbox Live is required before you can play any games, those who have got hold of an early Xbox look to be left with a big black paperweight.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore. Gamertag is neil363, feel free to add me to your list.
