2026's Best Games

Gothic Classic – back on consoles

Long before sprawling open worlds became the norm, Gothic was showing players that role-playing games didn’t need to hold your hand. Tough, unforgiving and packed with meaningful choices, it earned a devoted following when it first launched more than two decades ago. Now, Gothic Classic has made its way to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, giving console players another chance to experience one of the genre’s true pioneers.

Better still, this is only the beginning, with Gothic II Complete Classic arriving on September 29th, 2026, followed by Gothic III Classic on November 24th, 2026.

At A Glance

  • Game: Gothic Classic
  • Developer: THQ Nordic
  • Publisher: THQ Nordic
  • Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5

  • Genre: Action RPG

Welcome Back To The Colony

The world of Myrtana is at war. With Orc armies threatening the kingdom, the king desperately needs magical ore to forge weapons capable of turning the tide. Criminals are sentenced to work in the vast penal colony of Khorinis, sealed beneath an enormous magical barrier designed to keep prisoners locked inside.

There’s just one problem. The inmates take control.

The prison fractures into three rival factions, each fighting for power while the king is forced into uneasy negotiations with the very people he imprisoned. Into this volatile situation steps the Nameless Hero, thrown through the barrier with little more than the clothes on his back and survival as his only immediate goal.

From there, Gothic Classic lets players forge alliances, make enemies and carve their own path through one of RPG history’s most memorable settings.

The RPG That Inspired Generations

While many modern players may know Gothic through its recent remake, the original remains hugely influential.

Its living world, reactive NPCs and emphasis on player freedom helped establish ideas that countless RPGs would later build upon. Rather than directing players from quest marker to quest marker, Gothic encouraged exploration, experimentation and accepting that not every enemy could be beaten the first time you met them.

It wasn’t always an easy game, but that challenge became part of its identity – and one of the reasons it continues to be celebrated today.

The Gothic Saga Continues

Fans won’t have to wait long to continue the adventure either. THQ Nordic has confirmed that the rest of the classic trilogy is also making the jump to modern consoles, with Gothic II Complete Classic scheduled for September 29th before Gothic III Classic follows on November 24th.

That means Xbox and PlayStation players will soon be able to experience the entire legendary RPG series.

A New Way To Appreciate A Classic

Earlier this year we reviewed Gothic 1 Remake, awarding it 4/5 and noting: “Gothic 1 Remake is the best way to play Gothic today… For the most part, though, this is a game that will grow on you, slowly, surely, until you fall in love.

While the remake modernised the experience, there’s still something special about returning to the original that started it all. For long-time fans, it’s a welcome revival. For newcomers, it’s a chance to discover why Gothic remains one of the most influential RPGs ever created.

Gothic Classic launches on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S (here’s your Xbox Store link) and PlayStation 5 through the PlayStation Store. Gothic II Complete Classic follows on September 29th, before Gothic III Classic arrives on November 24th. Unfortunately Gothic Classic is not available as part of Game Pass and there is no Play Anywhere support either.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore. Gamertag is neil363, feel free to add me to your list.
