Habitat Shapes The Tropical Journey – shape fitting once more

Just when you think Afil Games might finally be slowing down, another colourful little puzzler quietly lands on the Xbox Store. This time around it’s Habitat Shapes: The Tropical Journey.

This is a relaxed shape-fitter built around adorable animals and tropical biomes. Did you expect anything else from Afil Games? Available now on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC, Habitat Shapes: The Tropical Journey launches with three separate versions, each priced at ÂŁ4.19.

More Shape-Sorting, More Cozy Vibes

Habitat Shapes: The Tropical Journey builds upon the foundations of the original Habitat Shapes, once again tasking players with carefully arranging creatures and shapes into neatly organised environments.

This latest release focuses on colourful tropical settings too, spreading 30 puzzle stages across three bright and cheerful biomes. The idea remains simple: pick up pieces, rotate them into position and slowly complete each habitat board until everything fits together perfectly.

There are no timers, no stressful fail states and no complicated mechanics getting in the way. It’s very much designed as a calm, low-pressure puzzler built around experimentation and spatial thinking.

And there’s no doubt, at this point Afil Games have almost perfected the art of these games. Or if not perfected, have at least ‘settled’.

A More Refined Habitat Shapes?

We reviewed the original Habitat Shapes back when it launched, landing on a respectable 3/5 score and saying: “I can’t help feeling that Habitat Shapes is a puzzle-designer short of a really good game. With more finesse in its layouts and the shapes that it offers, it would have been more memorable and stimulating to play. It gets so close, too; it forces a player to segregate birds from mammals, which is a novel kick (or rhino-horn) to the butt of the shape-sorting genre. It’s a great idea, but the puzzles never quite exploit it well enough.”

The Tropical Journey now looks set to expand on those ideas with more boards, improved visual themes and a stronger emphasis on satisfying puzzle flow.

Whether it fully evolves the formula remains to be seen, but there’s definitely still an audience for these cosy shape-based puzzlers on Xbox.

Another Busy Week For Afil Games

It almost feels impossible to keep up with Afil Games at this point. They have become one of the most consistent names on the Xbox storefront over the last couple of years, pushing out a steady stream of affordable puzzle games, platformers and cosy experiences across Xbox, PlayStation and PC. For instance, this is the second game THIS WEEK, following on from Snack and Quack: Ducklings Steps.

Habitat Shapes: The Tropical Journey is available now on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC, in three flavours.
