Will we ever tire of games that have been inspired by the classics of yesteryear? Simple answer, nope. And that is why the arrival of Battle Axe on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC is so damn exciting.

Having first run the Kickstarter route and than getting picked up by Numskull Games on the back of it, there is much hype surrounding the arrival of Battle Axe, even more so when you consider that there are two legends of the game helping ensure that the quality is as high as gamers of a modern day expect – veteran pixel artist Henk Nieborg and the VGM composer, Manami Matsumae.

With these two in house, and Numskull Games helping push it out to the biggest worldwide audience possible, there is certainly a lot to be excited about – particularly if you are a bit of a retro gamer. You see, Battle Axe will whisk us off to the land of Mercia; a land that has been gripped by the evil Etheldred; a sorceress of the north. It is her who sends her armies to the south every so often, picking and choosing the very best town inhabitants to join her cause – or life of slavery.

This is where you come in and by taking charge of an elf, a wizard or a marauder, you head on out in the hope of ending the sorceress’ plans once and for all. What could possibly go wrong? Delivered in delightful pixel arted style, nailing the whole hack n’ slash vibe, and powered along by a soundtrack from a legend, whether you take in Battle Axe as a solo player, or through cooperative ideals, matters little – this is a quest you are going to want to take in.

Features include:

  • • Pixel art fun – an adventure for pixel art enthusiasts, with gorgeously designed characters and environments to enjoy with every frame
  • • Hack n’ slash adventure – familiar yet revitalised, thanks to new gameplay elements, improved controls and pixel perfect animations
  • • Enjoy a timeless melody – a superb soundtrack by legendary composer Manami Matsumae
  • • Solo or co-op – choose from three highly-detailed heroes to embark with on your quest, playing alone or with a friend in local co-op

Our full review of Battle Axe on Xbox will be heading towards your eyes in the days ahead so make sure you keep a look out for it. Every seven years she sends her armies south to handpick inhabitants from each township who will be subjected to a life of slavery, and they are never heard from again. A call is sent out to champions across the land pleading with them to put an end to her rule. An elf, a wizard and a marauder answer the call.
