Split Fiction – out now!

The masterminds behind the critically acclaimed It Takes Two are back with another innovative cooperative experience, this time with Split Fiction.

Yep, it’s time for Hazelight Studios, led by the ever-passionate Josef Fares, to come to the fore once more, this time with the launch of Split Fiction, a genre-bending action-adventure game that’s all about friendship, collaboration, and mind-blowing moments.

Available now on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC for ÂŁ44.99, Split Fiction promises a wild ride through a kaleidoscope of worlds and challenges, designed to be shared with a friend.

And speaking of friends, the game features a fantastic Friend’s Pass that allows you to invite a buddy to join your adventure for free, even if they don’t own the game.

And if you’re wondering if Split Fiction lives up to the high bar set by Hazelight’s previous work, you’re not alone. We were thoroughly impressed with It Takes Two, awarding it a perfect 5/5 score and calling it a “stone-cold classic” that “vindicated” Josef Fares’ dedication to cooperative gaming. You can read our full review here.

Our thoughts surrounding Split Fiction will follow, very soon.

A Tale of Two Writers

Split Fiction follows the unlikely duo of Mio and Zoe, two contrasting writers who find themselves trapped in their own stories.

Mio, a sci-fi aficionado, and Zoe, a fantasy enthusiast, are connected to a mysterious machine designed to steal their creative ideas. Now, they must work together to escape this bizarre predicament, their memories hanging in the balance.

From Dragons to Cyber Ninjas

The game takes players on a whirlwind tour through a variety of imaginative worlds, seamlessly blending sci-fi and fantasy elements.

One minute you’ll be taming adorable dragons, the next you’ll be battling as cyber ninjas, escaping terrifying trolls, or dodging hovercars hurled by a rogue parking attendant. Split Fiction is a celebration of the unexpected, constantly throwing new challenges and surprises at players.

Co-op at its Core

Like It Takes Two and A Way Out before it, Split Fiction is built from the ground up for cooperative play. The game features split-screen action, requiring players to communicate, coordinate their actions, and utilize a variety of unique abilities to overcome obstacles. Whether you’re solving puzzles, navigating platforming challenges, or engaging in thrilling combat encounters, teamwork is the key to success.

Key Features

  • True Co-op Adventure: Experience a game designed exclusively for two players, with a focus on collaboration and communication.
  • Friend’s Pass: Invite a friend to join your adventure for free with the Friend’s Pass.
  • Unparalleled Variety: Discover new mechanics, abilities, and surprises in every level.
  • Genre-Bending Worlds: Explore a mix of sci-fi and fantasy environments.
  • The Power of Friendship: Forge a bond with your co-op partner and overcome challenges together.

More Than Just a Game

Split Fiction is more than just a fun co-op experience; it’s a celebration of friendship, creativity, and the power of collaboration. The game’s diverse challenges, unexpected twists, and focus on teamwork create a truly memorable and engaging adventure.

“Split Fiction is filled with the wildest stuff you’ll ever see in a co-op game. The gameplay variety is insane and I’m incredibly proud of the level of polish that we managed to do,”  said Josef Fares. “You’re going to visit some really incredible sci-fi and fantasy worlds, collaborate, and have a lot of fun – you guys are gonna love it.”

“Split Fiction is a bombastic, no-holds-barred celebration of what video games do best – entertain!” said Jeff Gamon, General Manager of EA Partners. “Once again, Josef and the fantastic team at Hazelight have proven themselves champions of cooperative adventure gaming. I’m as confident as anyone could be that gamers, their friends, families and loved ones will lose themselves completely in this extraordinary co-op journey.”

A Must-Play for Co-op Enthusiasts?

If you’re looking for a game to share with a friend or loved one, Split Fiction is an excellent choice. With its innovative gameplay, charming characters, and focus on collaborative storytelling, it’s an experience that’s sure to leave a lasting impression.

Split Fiction is available now on Xbox Series X|S (via the Xbox Store – ÂŁ44.99), PlayStation 5, and PC.

And if you need further convincing, we’ve also highlighted it in our Best Games for March 2025″ article.

Grab a friend, fire up your console, and prepare to embark on a mind-bending adventure that will test your friendship and your gaming skills.

Split Fiction Description

Embrace mind-blowing moments as you’re pulled deep into the many worlds of Split Fiction, a boundary-pushing co-op action adventure from the studio behind 2021 Game of the Year Winner, It Takes Two. Mio and Zoe are contrasting writers – one writes sci-fi and the other writes fantasy – who become trapped in their own stories after being hooked up to a machine designed to steal their creative ideas. They’ll have to rely on each other to break free with their memories in-tact, working together to master a variety of abilities and overcome diverse challenges while jumping between sci-fi and fantasy worlds in this unexpected tale of friendship.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
