2026's Best Games

A Blast of Extraction-Based Action!

There aren’t many games that can make chaos feel this organised. HELLDIVERS 2 drops you into a galactic warzone where freedom is defended with grenades, orbital strikes, and a healthy amount of satisfying dolphin dives. It’s frantically ridiculous and incredibly fun but it’s also finely tuned in a way that makes every mission feel sharp and rewarding.

This is co-op at its loudest and best, a shooter that thrives on camaraderie and improvisation. Yet it also works when you’re on your own, even if solo missions don’t quite capture the same spark. Not everything lands here. For example some environments feel strangely hollow, and darker levels lack the punch of daylight battlefields, but when HELLDIVERS 2 is in full flow, it’s an absolute blast and rightly regarded as one of the finest multiplayer titles of 2025.

Diving into Hell

Mission Design: Balanced, Sharp, and Satisfying

One of HELLDIVERS 2’s most magnetic strengths is its mission pacing. Each drop lands you into a compact operation that’s just long enough to build momentum and just about short enough to keep your attention locked. Whether you’re escorting scientists, uploading data, or wiping out nests, it feels like every stride, every firefight, every dive into cover, is calibrated to sustain adrenaline without overstaying its welcome.

This sense of measured pacing makes even solo runs engaging (to an extent), but bring in a squad, and the experience elevates. Crossplay means an Xbox drop pod can latch into missions with PC and PlayStation allies seamlessly. While solo is serviceable, it’s in the whispers over voice chat, the shared panic to resupply stratagems, and the synchronized clueless shooting where the game really shines.

Enemies, Loadouts & Customization Are Deep and Diverse

HELLDIVERS never lets you coast. Enemy types vary depending on three factions, from Terminid insects, zombie-like Illuminate and the intimidating Automatons. Each enemy archetype demands a different answer. Fortunately, the game arms you well, with customizable weapons and stratagems that feel fresh every drop.

Want to shred flies with a plasma rifle, ignite bots with a tailored flame weapon, or rain artillery at your squad’s feet with orbital strikes? You’ve got options. The deeper you dig into loadout fine tuning and customising, the more tactical the carnage becomes.

Teamplay Triumphs

Being a Helldiver with friends means passive reloads, dual-stratagem synergies, and disorganised chaos on the battlefield. Teaming up with friends is where the magic happens, but any squad will boost your experience tenfold. This is a game designed with multiplayer in mind and it definitely shows. Carving your way through hordes of enemies whilst completing your mission objectives for Super Earth is better with a buddy.

That being said, the mission loop, with its brief rallies and objective spikes, never lets the solo run become stale either. Whilst it’s far better and more engaging in a team, HELLDIVERS 2 can certainly still be enjoyed solo, though to a far lesser extent.

Explosive!

Empty Cities & Dull Night Zones

On the downside, some city-style maps lean into the sci-fi trope of empty streets. There’s grit missing, as well as lore, life and depth. Sure, this is war, but the hushed squares feel more hollow than haunting. The buildings are often ugly and it’s hard to imagine there was ever any kind of civilisation in place.

Then there are the darker levels like the moonlit automaton worlds or fog-choked alien jungles which look moody, but they’re not always fun. Visibility drops, navigation becomes guesswork, and the edge of tension dulls into frustration. Daylight, on the other hand, brings clarity to the chaos and allows for a more fun and engaging experience.

Repetition Threatens to Erode the Loop

Mission objectives can also start to feel rote: “Plant, escort, extract. Rinse, repeat.” Procedural generation keeps environments fresh-ish (though nothing saves the bland city levels) but the core loop can still hum on autopilot after dozens of drops. Of course, that’s the nature of an extraction shooter, especially when it’s PvE.

That said, environmental modifiers like weapon slowdowns on icy tundras, fog reducing sightlines or heat scanners failing in deserts all add micro-variations that keep alertness high and increase the immersion. It’s safe to say that HELLDIVERS 2 won’t necessarily captivate all players forever – but it does everything right for a very specific audience.

The Satire, the Sound, the Soul

Somewhere under all the bug guts and orbital lasers, there’s a wink at militaristic absurdity. Super Earth, anyone? The vocal quips, the satirical briefings, the delightfully ragdoll-y dives, it’s all very hyperbolic and entertaining, keeping the tone playful, even when you’re knee-deep in green, blue or red gore.

Somewhere in the midst, there’s clearly some critique of authoritarianism, imperial militarism and dastardly patriotism, though you might find yourself having to squint.

Captivating co-op

A Captivating Co-op Experience with Room to Grow

HELLDIVERS 2 on Xbox Series X is a triumph of co-op design featuring resourceful, percussive, and dangerously fun gameplay. The missions strike a sweet balance of duration and intensity, loadouts reward experimentation, and team synergy just works.

But it’s not flawless. A few environments feel empty, night missions lose their shine, and the mission cycle could use remixing. Still, this is a game that makes you want to squad up, dive in, and defend democracy in bloom-torching, bug-squishing glory.

For the high-energy moments, for the crew camaraderie, for the endless cascading explosions… Let’s get back out there for the sake of Super Earth!
