Relationships between neighbours can be mixed – typically ranging from ‘your friendly neighbourhood Spiderman’ to the connection between Ned Flanders and Homer Simpson. But I doubt even the most resentful of people will have the urge to break into a house, all in an attempt to discover the secrets of your new neighbour.
Alas, after moving into a new suburb the guy next door does seem quite shady, and you are sure there is something he is hiding. Therefore the only logical thing to do is to break into his house and his basement, all while keeping your own schemes from the nosey man himself.
Available right now, the catch in Hello Neighbor comes in the form of the supremely clever AI who plays the role of the neighbour – keeping an eye on the player’s actions throughout the game and acting accordingly. For example, if it identifies that you have taken a preference to sneaking through the front window, then expect a bear trap waiting for you the next time you try to break in.
It all boils down to forming a solid plan to achieve your goal, as you adapt to the antics of your enemy. If you thought it will all just be fun though, then you couldn’t be further from the truth. Yes, the rollercoaster winding round the house may seem enjoyable but when you are surprised by an animatronic mannequin shortly before disturbing the neighbour in the bathroom, and then being chased out of the house, you may start to begin to understand the ‘stealth horror’ aspect of Hello Neighbor.
If you view breaking into your neighbour’s house your idea of a good time and want to get to the bottom of the basement mystery, then £23.99 spent in the Microsoft Store will see Hello Neighbor arrive on your virtual Xbox One shelf. Alternatively, the game will be available on PC from today also – and if you live in the US then a physical copy of the game can be picked up from all good retailers. If you like to have your games lined up neatly on your shelf than in assorted rows on your Xbox One, then that’s the way forward.
