Heading Out – racing to console

There’s a certain romance to the great American road trip – the endless asphalt, the tales told over the radio, the freedom of the unknown. The critically acclaimed narrative-driving adventure Heading Out bottles that lightning, and soon, console players will get to experience its haunting, black-and-white journey for themselves.

Publisher Crunching Koalas – they previously behind the likes of The Gap and Darkwood – has announced it is bringing the Serious Sim-developed title to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

To mark the occasion, a brand-new cinematic trailer has been released, showcasing the game’s unique, film-noir-on-wheels aesthetic for console audiences. This announcement comes alongside a major update for the existing PC version, which goes live today.

Your Legend, Your Radio, Your Road

In Heading Out, you are the driver, a mysterious fugitive racing against fear itself across a mythologized American landscape. Part outlaw, part folk hero, your journey unfolds through a powerful blend of high-octane chases, introspective storytelling, and resource management. This isn’t just about winning a race; it’s about survival and writing your own legend on the open road.

Each playthrough is a unique, procedurally generated road trip where your choices in branching narrative encounters matter. Your actions are dynamically reflected by a radio system that broadcasts news, commentary, and music tailored to the legend – or cautionary tale – you are creating.

In Trusted Hands

The unique formula was mastered by developer Serious Sim, a studio known for creating thought-provoking games with deep narrative systems. The console conversion is in the trusted hands of Crunching Koalas; a studio with an impressive track record that includes Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales and Darkwood, ensuring the experience will be expertly translated.

While console players will need to wait a little longer to start their engines, PC players benefit from today’s news immediately. A substantial new update is live today on Steam, introducing interface improvements, increased game stability, a performance boost, and numerous bugfixes.

And if you’re looking to start your cross-country journey right away, Heading Out is currently on discount on Steam to celebrate the console announcement.

Every choice you make carves a new path, and every song on the radio tells your tale. Get ready to write your own legend when Heading Out pulls into the Xbox and PlayStation garage. We’ll be sure to remind you when it hits the console road.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
