Cultist Simulator – create your own cult

Mysteries await as a Lovecraftian roguelike narrative card experience launches onto Xbox and PlayStation in the form of Cultist Simulator.

We’ve played tens, hundreds, of simulators over the years, from the realistic to the downright stupid. But we’re not sure we’ve ever taken in a Lovecraftian horror, especially not one that builds in some roguelike elements. But it’s that which comes to hand, literally, with Klabater and Weather Factory’s Cultist Simulator.

Join the cult

Available right now on xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Cultist Simulator is a critically acclaimed, double-BAFTA nominated affair that offers up a seriously imaginative gaming experience.

It’s set in the 1920s, as we are whisked off to a world of gods and secrets. It’s here in Cultist Simulator where players will find themselves taking in a journey of apocalypse and yearning as they go on the hunt for knowledge, for power, for beauty and for revenge. Do so and a story – as well as the fate of your own cult – will be shaped.

Key features

  • Seize Forbidden Treasures: Discover and claim powerful relics.
  • Summon Alien Gods: Call upon otherworldly entities to aid your cause.
  • Feed on Your Disciples: Use followers to sustain your unholy ambitions.
  • Craft Tools and Summon Spirits: Create and control powerful artifacts.
  • Indoctrinate Innocents: Recruit and indoctrinate new members into your cult.
  • Unravel Arcane Mysteries: Decode ancient texts and perform sanity-twisting rituals.

You’ll find Cultist Simulator on the Xbox Store and PlayStation Store, depending on your console of choice.

For us on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, there are a couple of options. The Cultist Simulator: Initiate Edition will set you back £20.99, chucking in three DLC packs for good measure. Those packs? Well, they come in the form of The DANCER, The PRIEST and The GHOUL…

  • The DANCER – In the occult cabaret that calls itself the Ecdysis Club, the distinction between pleasure and pain is as delicate and essential as the human skin. It is all that keeps us from making the very worst mistakes. Pursue a career as a Dancer at the Club. Determine which parts of yourself to surrender. Cross oceans in pursuit of the ancient rites that beat in the Wood. Consider the ascensions that open to you. Choose carefully.
  • The PRIEST – A quiet suburban parish needs a new priest. Perhaps this might finally be the one who shows them the Way. Though their doctrines might be considered peculiar, their faith cannot be denied. Follow the path of Knock and serve your Disciples, both master and mastered. What is mortification of the flesh, set against those glorious visions of St Agnes? What the pain of this fleeting world against immortality as Martyr of the Keys?
  • The GHOUL – A disgraced medium. A gallery without windows. An elixir which permits the most final of feasts. A gnawing hunger which cannot be denied. All reflected in the snow-coloured eyes of Miss Naenia, gentlest of the Elegiast’s Names. Dig in cemeteries. Desecrate tombs. Consume the dead to unearth their secrets or commemorate them. Comfort or betray the living. Eternize the lost Hours in the Palest of Paintings. Just be careful to feed your hunger before it grows beyond you.

Alternatively there is the Cultist Simulator: Anthology Edition for £24.99. That adds in The EXILE for good measure, otherwise available for £8.39.

  • The EXILE – Europe, 1925. There’s the invisible world… and then there’s the invisible underworld. The reckoner mobs exist on the fringes of the possible. They traffic in the most precious commodity imaginable: life, apportioned and credited in the Cindered Tally of the Madrugad. You were one of them. Now you’re on the run, with nothing but the clothes on your back and a staggering fortune in borrowed years. The reckoner lord you betrayed is intent on extracting every heartbeat you’ve stolen – even if he has to track you across three continents. Disappear into the mists of the Nameless Name of the Velvet… use your lethal loot to win favour and wealth and build a new life… or choose defiance, and attempt the impossible.

Expect similar on PlayStation.

Our full review of Cultist Simulator on Xbox is coming.

Cultist Simulator Description

Cultist Simulator is a game of apocalypse and yearning. Play as a seeker after unholy mysteries, in a 1920s-themed setting of hidden gods and secret histories. Perhaps you’re looking for knowledge, or power, or beauty, or revenge. Perhaps you just want the colours beneath the skin of the world. In this roguelike narrative card game, what you find may transform you forever. Every choice you make, from moment to moment, doesn’t just advance the narrative – it also shapes it. Become a scholar of the unseen arts. Search your dreams for sanity-twisting rituals. Craft tools and summon spirits. Indoctrinate innocents. Seize your place as the herald of a new age.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
