Inspired by Monty Python, The Procession to Calvary marches onto Xbox and Switch

There is much you can blame Monty Python for, with film and TV holding it as inspiration for many. But slowly and surely that same Python vibe is making moves in the gaming scene with Joe Richardson’s The Procession to Calvary one of the finest examples. It just so happens that it’s now playable on Xbox and Nintendo Switch.

Previously limited to those playing their games on other formats, like PC and mobile devices, The Procession to Calvary now makes waves on console, with release on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch, with a PS4 version to follow very soon after. It’s a game that has gone down great guns on PC through Steam, and our full review of The Procession to Calvary on Xbox One follows that similar pattern – make sure you give it a read right now.

The Procession to Calvary comes to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S via the usual Xbox Store download, and it’ll cost you £12.49 should you be willing to take that route. If you do, you’ll find a game that has been massively inspired by the brilliance of Monty Python as Digerati and Richardson come together with a fine point-and-click experience.

It’s the artstyle that is immediately apparent here and by taking hundreds of Renaissance paintings and mashing them up into a madcap montage of imagery, this is possibly one of the most unique games you will be playing this year. Honestly, it looks utterly brilliant and we’re not really sure how Joe Richardson has been able to craft something so glorious.

It’s not just about the art though – there’s a story too. This one will have you playing as an unnamed heroine who is on the hunt for the evil Heavenly Peter. You’ll only get to find this dude though by chatting to others, by solving some complex puzzles and by utilising your finest point-and-click skills. Thankfully there’s the chance to skip those you don’t like too – by pulling off the odd optional murder.

The key features of The Procession to Calvary include:

  • Pointing and Clicking: A traditional point and click interface, with a ‘verb coin’ interaction menu and a simple inventory from which you can access your preciously hoarded items
  • Renaissance Artwork: Paintings by Rembrandt, Botticelli, Michelangelo and many more are brought together into one consistent world
  • Classical Music: A soundtrack selected to fit with the style of the artwork. Enjoy music from composers such as Vivaldi, Bach, and George Frideric Handel
  • Optional Murder: Kill anyone who stands in your way and skip puzzles you don’t like. But be warned; your actions might come back to haunt you…
  • Nonsense: But rest assured, while some of the jokes may be ridiculous, the puzzles make perfect sense!

If you’re sold, and you should be, get over to the Xbox Store right now. You’ll also find the game on Nintendo Switch and previously on PC. Should you be playing on PS4, you’ll need to hold tight a little longer.

Game Description:

Huzzah! The holy war is over! Your oppressors have been vanquished, the churches of the Old God lay in ruin and thousands of innocent people have been murdered! But it’s not all good news; the tyrant Heavenly Peter has escaped your clutches, and you have been tasked with finding him…

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
