It’s squeaky bum time in Macrotis: A Mother’s Journey on Xbox One and PS4

It’s a parent’s worst nightmare: turn your back and your kids are whisked away. Worse still is that they’re taken from you in a flash flood. Worse still than that, you’re a mouse. For Mother Bilby, the playable character of Macrotis: A Mother’s Tale, this is all very much a reality, but she’s not going to sit by and let it happen. She’s going after them. Macrotis: A Mother’s Journey is out now on Xbox One and PS4.

Fair play to her, because it doesn’t look like it’s going to be easy. This is a story-driven platformer, very much in the vibe of Inside or Limbo, and there are plenty of obstacles in your way. Luckily, you’re not a helpless mouse – you’re more on the heroic Mickey Mouse, Ratatouille, Basil end of the spectrum – and you have compunction. You’ll use the in-game water physics to your benefit, dig under stuff, and use your mousey noggin to overcome environmental puzzles.

There’s a supernatural twist too, as you will gain magical abilities as you journey through. It’s not hugely clear how you get these powers, but expect to walk through walls and raise gates with your mind. If all mice could do that, we’d be doomed.

Graphically, it looks attractive. We’ve not come across Macrotis before, but it’s clearly had a lot of time spent on it, with atmospheric lighting that really underlines the lonesome task you have ahead of you. It does a spiffing job of building a world that is so much bigger than you, too.

There’s a long line of high quality rodent-based games out there – will Macrotis: A Mother’s Journey join the hallowed halls of Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion, Biker Mice From Mars, A Plague Tale and Vermintide? – so we’re on the edge of our seat in anticipation. It might make it by a whisker. Only our full review will tell.

Macrotis: A Mother’s Tale is out now on Xbox One and will cost you £9.99 – discounted to £7.99 for two weeks only. It’s also carved a mousehole into your PS4.
