The John Wick universe is heading back into gaming, and this time it’s going big.

Announced during Sony’s State of Play showcase, an untitled AAA John Wick video game is now in development from Lionsgate and Saber Interactive, bringing the Baba Yaga to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in a cinematic single-player action experience.

For fans of the films, this is shaping up to be the most ambitious interactive adaptation of the franchise yet; a full-scale third-person action game built around the signature “gun-fu” combat style that made the movies iconic.

A New Story In The John Wick Timeline

Rather than retelling events from the films, the new John Wick game will explore an original narrative set before the “Impossible Task”, expanding the franchise’s lore and introducing both familiar faces and entirely new characters.

The project is being developed in close collaboration with the people who helped define the cinematic series.

Director Chad Stahelski is involved in production, while Keanu Reeves will reprise the role of John Wick, lending his likeness and voice to the character.

I can’t wait for fans to step into the shoes of John Wick and explore the multi-dimensional world of The High Table,” stated Jenefer Brown, President of Global Products & Experiences at Lionsgate. “We are collaborating closely with Saber’s dedicated team to develop a game that captures the unparalleled action, brand-defining fight choreography, immersive world-building, and authenticity of the films.

John Wick is one of the most iconic characters in action film history. Saber is honored to be working alongside Chad, Keanu and the Lionsgate team in a true collaboration to bring the world of Wick to life in a AAA game,” said Matthew Karch, CEO at Saber Interactive.

Gun-Fu Meets AAA Game Design

Saber Interactive is aiming to translate the style and intensity of the films into gameplay, combining:

  • Cinematic third-person action combat
  • Signature John Wick “gun-fu” choreography
  • High-speed driving sequences
  • Immersive world-building
  • Story-driven missions
  • Mature, cinematic presentation

The studio has experience with large-scale action projects, most recently delivering Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, which demonstrated its ability to handle fast-paced, brutal combat systems.

If that expertise carries over, this could finally deliver the definitive John Wick gaming experience fans have been waiting for.

From Tactical Spin-Off To Full Action Experience

This isn’t the first time John Wick has appeared in games. Back in 2020, the franchise received a strategic spin with John Wick Hex, which approached the action from a tactical perspective.

As we said in our review at the time: “You’ll emerge from John Wick Hex on the Xbox bruised and a little scarred, but ultimately satisfied… it’s got enough peaks to make it worth a shot.

But this new AAA project looks set to deliver something very different – a direct, cinematic action experience that mirrors the films far more closely.

What We Know So Far

Here’s a quick breakdown of the announcement:

  • AAA John Wick video game announced by Lionsgate and Saber Interactive
  • Single-player third-person action game
  • Original story set before the Impossible Task
  • Keanu Reeves involved and reprising John Wick
  • Chad Stahelski collaborating on production
  • Gun-fu combat system inspired by the films
  • In development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC
  • Wishlist now available on digital storefronts

The Baba Yaga Returns

The John Wick franchise has grown into a global action phenomenon across films, television, and now gaming. With Saber Interactive at the helm and the creative team from the movies directly involved, this new AAA title has the potential to become the most authentic John Wick adaptation yet.

It’s still early days, but one thing feels certain, stepping into the polished shoes of the Baba Yaga is going to be intense.

And yes… we’re thinking he’s back.
