Weapons As Tools, Not Just Weapons
Castle Crusade sticks to the established Johann formula – compact levels packed with hazards, secrets, and tight jumps – but with an emphasis on versatility.
Johann’s weapons aren’t simply for combat. They double as traversal tools, letting players climb, block incoming hits, and carve a path through obstacles. Movement and combat feel intertwined, encouraging creative use of mechanics rather than brute-force approaches.
Each stage challenges players to collect goblets, uncover hidden secrets, and complete time trials, all while preparing for a climactic boss encounter.
Built For Speed
As with previous entries, Castle Crusade is designed with speedrunning at its core. Levels reward mastery, efficient routes, and repeat attempts.
This isn’t a sprawling adventure either. It’s a tightly focused experience built around replayability. One clean run can quickly turn into several more as players shave seconds off their times and refine their strategy.
That focus has long defined the series. In our 4/5 review of Journey of Johann: Grasslands, we noted:
“Don’t expect any of the life-changing themes or revelations you might find in a more fleshed out, longer experience. Journey of Johann will simply provide a great hour’s worth of fast-paced fun, with excellent replayability if you decide to delve into its speedrunning roots.”
Other entries have proven more divisive. Snowy Mountain landed at 2.5/5, while Cave Explorer scored 3.5/5, each praised for ambition but occasionally criticised for stage design inconsistencies.
Castle Crusade now looks to refine that formula once again.
Part Of A Growing Johann Collection
For those yet to dive into Johann’s world, Castle Crusade is also included in the Journey of Johann Biome Bundle, priced at £12.49. That bundle gathers those previous entries in the series, offering a broader look at Johann’s compact, speed-focused adventures.
A Castle Worth Conquering?
Journey of Johann: Castle Crusade continues the series’ tradition of delivering short, sharp platforming bursts built for players who enjoy repetition, optimisation, and clean execution.
Available now on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PC, it offers another budget-friendly challenge for those chasing quick reflex tests and leaderboard dominance.
The castle gates are open. The real question is how fast you can reach the top.
