Kamiko: a Zelda Inspired Action Game Hits Xbox One

If you’re a sucker for anything Japanese, you’ll probably be interested in knowing that Kamiko has now released on Xbox One. Developed by Skipmore, this top-down action game draws inspiration from 1986’s (oh, dear lord) The Legend of Zelda.

Available to purchase and download right now, unlike its three-decades-old predecessor, Kamiko focuses on action and a more simple approach to puzzle-solving. In Kamiko you must fight against hordes of enemies and collect currency from them. This collected currency allows you to perform special attacks and also unlock gates, which eventually lead you to a boss battle. Fighting without getting hit also racks up your character’s combo, increasing the amount of dropped currency.

Choose between three cutesy priestesses known as Kamiko to play as — Yamato (not affiliated with Vergil, probably), Uzume and Hinome. Each character wields different abilities and plays distinctly, providing a unique gameplay experience and replay value.

Yamato fights swiftly with a big sword in her hand. Uzume prefers long-ranged combat and employs a bow and arrow to shoot enemies from afar. And finally, Hinome uses a sword and Yata mirror to throw at her enemies which always returns to her hand.

Its gameplay takes place from a top-down perspective, with characters moving quickly across the environment and dispatching monsters. And if you prefer colourful pixelated visuals then Kamiko has got you covered in that department as well.

According to the description on the Xbox Store, Kamiko is styled around Japanese Shinto beliefs. Shinto, to put it simply, is a religion that focuses on maintaining ancient Japanese tradition and rituals in modern-day Japan. These inspirations are reflected in everything, from weapons and characters to environments and specific objects. Also, Kami is derived from the Japanese “God”, a word no doubt familiar to players of Okami.

Switch players have enjoyed the colourful action of Kamiko for over two years now, whereas PC and PS4 players received it merely two months ago. And now, at long last, it finally arrives on the Xbox One. So if you’re on the market for a stylish and colourful action game with an oriental flavour, then for just £3.59, you really can’t go wrong.

Tell us what you think of Kamiko in the comments below and look forward to our written review here on TheXboxHub.

Game Description:

KAMIKO is a game styled around Japanese Shinto beliefs. Fight as priestesses called “KAMIKO” and battle against demons while solving puzzles to make your way through the stages. Look no further if you are looking for an arcade action game with a twist! Each stage has several Torii (gates) which are magically sealed. Find a way to break all the seals to make your way to the stage boss. Another fun and easy original created by indie games SKIPMORE.
