Lil Gator Game: In The Dark expansion keyart as the Gator of the Year edition goes live
Lil Gator explores glowing underground caves in the In the Dark expansion, meeting new friends and discovering hidden treasures beneath the island.

The charming world of Lil Gator Game is growing in unexpected ways with the arrival of Lil Gator Game: In the Dark, a new expansion that takes players below the island’s sunny playground and into a cosy underground world of caves, critters, and new friendships.

Available now for ÂŁ10.74, the DLC launches alongside the Lil Gator Game: Gator of the Year Edition, which bundles the base game and expansion together.

Playable on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC, this expansion doubles the size of Lil Gator’s adventure while maintaining the gentle humour and imaginative spirit that made the original so memorable.

A Whole New World Beneath The Island

The new content begins with a simple discovery – a cave entrance hidden in plain sight on the island from the base game. Following it leads to an expansive underground environment filled with glowing tunnels, winding caverns, and peaceful hideaways.

This subterranean setting introduces a softer, quieter tone compared to the open island above. Glowsticks light the way through cozy spaces packed with secrets, collectibles, and small moments of exploration that reward curiosity.

New Friends And Familiar Themes

As with the base game, the heart of In the Dark lies in meeting new characters and helping them solve their problems. The cave network is filled with new companions, each with small quests that reinforce the game’s themes of kindness, imagination, and collaboration.

Not every encounter is friendly at first, though. A group of teenage troublemakers threatens to disrupt the peaceful underground world, giving Lil Gator a new challenge that relies on empathy rather than conflict.

The expansion introduces several new tools and abilities that change how players move and explore. One standout addition is a gymnastic ribbon that enables Lil Gator to double jump across gaps and caves, opening up new traversal possibilities.

There are also new item types to collect and use, along with playful combat moments against cardboard enemies, ensuring the DLC keeps the same imaginative tone that defines the main game.

What Lil Gator Game: In the Dark Adds

Here’s a quick look at what players can expect from the expansion:

  • A large underground cave region to explore
  • New characters and quests
  • Narrative encounters with teenage troublemakers
  • New traversal abilities including double jump mechanics
  • Additional collectibles and equipment
  • A continuation of Lil Gator’s story

The DLC effectively acts as a cosy epilogue, expanding the world without losing its charm.

A Gentle Return To A Delightful World

When we reviewed Lil Gator Game, awarding it 3.5/5, we highlighted how its warmth and imagination carried the experience: “Regardless of its rudimentary combat or the lack of a map, Lil Gator Game is simply a delight, thanks to strong writing, worthwhile collectibles, thoughtful exploration, and rewarding sidequests.”

In the Dark leans into those strengths, focusing on exploration, character interactions, and playful discovery rather than dramatic mechanical changes.

A Bigger Playground For Lil Gator

Lil Gator Game: In the Dark feels less like a dramatic sequel and more like a heartfelt extension of the original adventure. By expanding the world underground and introducing new friends, tools, and stories, the expansion offers players a cosy return to a world built on imagination and kindness.

For anyone who enjoyed wandering the island with Lil Gator, this new underground journey provides the perfect excuse to jump back in and play again.

Find the In The Dark expansion on the usual digital storefronts, like that of the Xbox Store and Steam. There’s a page up for the Gator of the Year Edition too.
