The keyart for Loan Shark, as it launches onto Xbox with play on Series X|S
A dark fishing horror experience where every deal pulls you deeper in Loan Shark on Xbox Series X|S

Loan Shark is now casting its line onto Xbox Series X|S, bringing a deeply unsettling twist to what might otherwise sound like a quiet night of fishing.

Developed by Studio Ortica and published by Dark Product, this short-form horror experience trades relaxation for dread, blending debt, desperation, and the unknown into a tightly focused narrative that lingers long after the credits roll.

Already earning Very Positive reviews on Steam, Loan Shark finally makes the jump to console, offering Xbox players a chance to discover why this is one fishing trip they won’t forget.

A Deal That Should Never Be Made

At the heart of Loan Shark is a simple but sinister premise. You play as an angler drowning in debt, stuck working endless nights at sea with little hope of escape. That changes when you reel in something impossible – a talking fish named Cagliuso.

Cagliuso offers wealth, but every promise comes with consequences. Each choice pulls you further into a spiral of obligation, sacrifice, and fear.

The “loan shark” here isn’t just a clever title; it’s a looming presence, one that watches your decisions and steadily tightens its grip as time slips away.

This is horror built around tension rather than jump scares, where every deal feels like a mistake even as it tempts you forward.

Fishing Mechanics With A Dark Edge

Loan Shark might feature rods, reels, and nets, but this is about as far from a cosy fishing game as you can get.

Players will:

  • Fly-fish under pressure, watching fish approach via an unsettling underwater eye-cam
  • Gut their catch to keep it fresh, carefully handling the knife to avoid injury
  • Race against time as unseen threats stalk the waters below

Every task is laced with unease, transforming routine actions into nerve-wracking moments where something always feels just a little bit off.

Designed To Be Experienced In One Sitting

Clocking in at around 30 minutes, Loan Shark is deliberately concise. It’s a compact, narrative-driven horror game built to be played through in a single session, allowing its themes of hopelessness and debt to hit hard without overstaying their welcome.

Surreal dialogue, twisted choices, and a creeping sense of inevitability ensure the experience remains focused and impactful from start to finish.

Not Your Typical Fishing Game

We’ve previously highlighted some of the more traditional angling experiences in our best fishing games on Xbox feature, but Loan Shark sits firmly at the opposite end of that spectrum.

There’s no peaceful lakeside ambience here – just dark waters, bad decisions, and the growing certainty that something terrible is closing in.

Key Features At A Glance

  • Available now on Xbox Series X|S
  • Short-form horror experience lasting around 30 minutes
  • Narrative-driven gameplay focused on debt and desperation
  • Underwater eye-cam fishing mechanics
  • Gutting and preparation systems with risk-reward tension

  • Already rated Very Positive on Steam

Is Loan Shark on Xbox?

Unfortunately, at launch, Loan Shark is not available as part of an Xbox or PC Game Pass subscription. That could, obviously, change going forward, what with the ever-evolving, ever-revolving nature of Game Pass itself.

If Loan Shark does ever arrive on the scheme, we’ll be sure to let you know.

However, a download will only cost you ÂŁ4.19, so this one shouldn’t be breaking the bank.

One Catch You’ll Wish You’d Never Reeled In

Loan Shark proves that horror doesn’t need sprawling worlds or endless hours to be effective. With its unsettling premise, clever subversion of fishing mechanics, and relentless sense of dread, this is a compact experience that knows exactly what it wants to say – and isn’t afraid to say it.

If you’re looking for something dark, different, and deeply uncomfortable on Xbox Series X|S, this is one line worth casting… even if you may regret what bites back.

Cast out onto the Xbox Store.
