Mash That ‘A’ Button – One Button Games 5-in-1 vol. 2 Launches with New Challenges

Latest Reviews

The ultimate test of single-input skill (or perhaps patience?) returns in One Button Games 5-in-1 vol. 2.

One Button Games 5-in-1 vol. 2 has pressed its way onto Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S thanks to those at ABA Games and the ever-prolific Xitilon. This second collection of five distinct, fast-paced arcade games, all controlled with just one button, is available now for the tiny price of £4.19.

This new volume follows in the minimalist footsteps of its predecessor, challenging players to master diverse scenarios using only the most basic of control schemes.

Five New One-Button Wonders (or Woes?)

One Button Games 5-in-1 vol. 2 offers another quintet of unique experiences, each designed around that singular input:

  • D PISTOLS: You’re constantly moving up and down. Tapping the button changes your direction AND fires your sideways-shooting pistols. Holding the button charges a shot that fires in all four directions. Your goal? Shoot all enemies approaching from the sides before they reach the middle and adjust their path based on your position.
  • EMBATTLED: Again, you move up and down, but this time enemies on both sides are shooting at you and closing in. Pressing the button (or hitting the screen edge) reverses your direction. Holding the button raises shields, but this makes enemies shoot and advance faster! The trick? Avoid their shots and try to make them hit each other to score points.
  • TOTOGE: Take control of a constantly falling chicken aiming for one side of the screen. Your task is to avoid landing on randomly appearing spikes. A button press makes your chicken jump, scoring more points the further it travels before landing. Hitting the sides of the screen reverses your chicken’s falling direction.
  • BOMB UP: You are in constant freefall. Press the button to fire a bomb, and press it again to detonate it. Score points by destroying all red squares within the bomb’s blast radius. The explosion also bounces you up and to the side, and you’ll turn around when you hit a wall.
  • TAPPUMP: Control a circle with the goal of moving forward while avoiding mines and staying within the screen’s horizontal borders. A button press makes you jump, while holding it increases your circle’s radius. Collecting coins scores points.

Our History with One-Button Mayhem

We dived into the first volume of this experimental series One Button Games 5-in-1 back in 2023, giving it a 2.5/5 score. We found it to be:

something of a mixed bag that averages out in the 2.5 out of 5 range. As an experiment – something that scratches the itch of whether games can work with one button – One Button Games 5-in-1 might be worth £4.19 to find out for yourself. As an exercise in accessibility, it’s noble and that price tag will have appeal. But as games, the five on offer here are at best disposable… and at worst unwieldy. There are certainly better things that you can do with one button, like flip on the kettle.

Will Volume 2 manage to refine the formula and offer more compelling one-button experiences? Only time (and a review) will tell.

Optimised or Standard: Your Xbox Choice

Xitilon offers two ways to get this new collection on Xbox, both currently £3.35 with the launch discount (standardly £4.19):

One Button Games 5-in-1 vol. 2 (Xbox Series X|S Optimised Edition)
One Button Games 5-in-1 vol. 2 (Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S Edition)

There is also the Bundle that brings both together for £8.39.

Key Aspects of This Button Bonanza

One Button Games 5-in-1 vol. 2 delivers five new, fast-paced arcade challenges, each controlled with just a single button.

From shooting down enemies in D PISTOLS and EMBATTLED, to avoiding spikes as a falling chicken in TOTOGE, strategically bombing targets in BOMB UP, or navigating hazards in TAPPUMP, this collection tests your timing and reflexes in unique ways.

Ready to Test Your Digit?

This second volume of One Button Games offers another set of unique, minimalist challenges at an undeniably low price point. If you’re curious about the limits and possibilities of one-button game design, or just looking for some quick, cheap arcade fun (and potentially some easy Gamerscore), it’s available right now on the Xbox Store.
