Are you ready to try and alter the past, all in order to save the future? In Eternal Threads you’ll be doing just that, and today a fully confirmed May release has been locked in.

Coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5 and PC come May 19th 2022, with a Nintendo Switch drop kicking in a little later down the line, Eternal Threads is a new single player, first-person, non-linear narrative adventure by the teams at Cosmonaut Studios and their publisher, Secret Mode.

A game that is all about time manipulation, choice and consequence, players who are interested in what Eternal Threads has to offer – ie, us, and we’ll be following with a preview and then full review as soon as we can – will be able to wishlist the game on Steam, whilst also being among the first to play Eternal Threads when a playable demo, containing up to an hour of gameplay, is made available for a limited window between May 2nd-8th 2022.

But what is Eternal Threads all about? Well, as an operative tasked with fixing corruption in the timestream, you have been sent to the North of England in May 2015; a place and time where six people died in a house fire. Prohibited from simply stopping the fire, you must instead manipulate the choices made by the housemates in the week leading up to it, all so that they survive the event.

You’ll be given free and complete reign to explore the seven-day timeline before the fire, watching and altering the most significant events from the entire week as many times as you like and in whatever order you wish. Some decisions will have only minor effects on the timeline, moving objects around the house or revealing deeper stories and secrets. But go deep with major changes and you’ll be found rewriting the Eternal Threads timeline, changing existing events, adding new events, and even replacing other events entirely.

It’ll be up to you to traverse up and down this timeline, changing decisions at different moments throughout the week so that their effects interact and combine to save all six housemates. At the end of the day though, it is not just the housemates who have choices. Each of them can be saved from the fire in multiple ways, with each outcome having a profound effect on their lives in the future.

The question is, will you just search for the quickest and easiest solution, or can you find the best possible outcome for everyone? It’s all about the choices you make, and the consequences that then play out.

The key features of Eternal Threads include:

  • Choose how you want to follow the game’s story – Want to follow each of the six characters’ stories ‘Pulp Fiction’ style? Want to watch the whole thing like ‘Memento’, with the final event first and then moving back in time to see what caused it afterwards? Or maybe you’re old school and just want to watch things in good-old chronological order? You decide.
  • Watch and change things as many times as you like – Can’t remember exactly what happened in an event? Changed a decision and you’re not sure you like the consequences? That’s fine. Just pop back along the timeline and watch and change whatever you like, whenever you like, as many times as you like.
  • Change the past to affect the future – Setting up temporary base in the house mere hours after the fire, provides a unique perspective on events. As you look back through the timeline, past events play out in front of you in ghostly form, with the smoke and fire damaged house a constant reminder of what is to come. In addition, as you manipulate the past, the environment can be reset around you to match the changes taking place. Some new objects will appear, others will move around the house and the contents of rooms can change substantially as you change the past.

Eternal Threads will launch on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5 and PC come May 19th 2022. Expect a Nintendo Switch version to follow a little later.

Let us know what you think of this one. There’s much excitement for it coming from our side…

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
