This is a 2D platformer starring a, well, muscular cat who fights aliens, has just pounced onto Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S (and PlayStation 4/5, and Nintendo Switch). Yes, you read that correctly. A. Muscular. Cat. Fighting. Aliens.
Developed by Kamotachi and published by Mameshiba Games, KinnikuNeko is priced at £14.99 and promises an experience that’s as bonkers as it sounds. After flexing its muscles on Steam a year ago (and receiving a major update), this feline fighter is finally ready to rumble on consoles.
Prepare for Purr-fectly Absurd Action!
KinnikuNeko (which, let’s be honest, is already an amazing name) puts you in the paws of a cat with the physique of a bodybuilder. Seriously, this kitty is ripped, about as far from the feline protagonist found in Stray as you are likely to get. He’s also Earth’s last hope against a massive alien invasion that has captured all of humanity… except for KinnikuNeko and his friends, Lemon and Keita.
You’ll be platforming, punching, and probably meowing your way through a variety of levels, using your feline agility and, uh, impressive musculature to take down the extraterrestrial threat.
The game even throws in some mini-games to mix things up. You can purr like a kitten one moment, and then punch with the force of a school bus the next! We’re not making this up.
’90s Anime Vibes and Goofy Humour
KinnikuNeko is a love letter to ’90s Japanese anime, with a visual style that’s both striking and hilariously over-the-top. The story promises to be just as wild, packed with goofy humour, friendship, drama, and, of course, plenty of action. You’ll encounter charismatic and unforgettable characters, including the “sleek and ferocious” General Pitaya and her minions.
And because this game clearly doesn’t take itself too seriously, there’s even a dedicated “meow” button.
