The new football season is underway in eFootball, with KONAMI rolling out a sizeable 2027 update that looks to make matches more tactical, more flexible and a little more unpredictable. Alongside a host of gameplay changes, the free-to-play football game gets a new Custom Tournament mode, fresh daily content and new Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal editions.
The update is available across Xbox, PlayStation, PC and mobile, giving players plenty of reasons to get back on the virtual pitch as the 2026/27 season gets underway.

Build Your Own Tournament And Change Formation On The Fly
One of the biggest additions is Custom Tournament, giving players more control over how they compete with friends. Up to eight players can take part, with organisers able to set their own rules and themes before watching matches unfold.
That ability to spectate games in real time should make the new mode particularly useful for groups looking to create their own competitions rather than simply jumping into standard matches.
KONAMI is also introducing Fluid Formations, allowing players to switch between attacking and defensive setups during a match. Combined with additional Playing Styles and tactical options, it should give managers more opportunity to react to how a game is developing. Sometimes the best tactic is knowing when to change it.
A New Way To Strike
The gameplay changes don’t stop at formations. Dynamic Volley gives players greater control over first-time attempts when the ball arrives through the air, while a collection of new animations covers everything from movement and dribbling to passing, shooting, trapping and goalkeeper actions.
The aim is a more authentic match experience, with those small movements potentially making a noticeable difference when games get tight.
Antonio Conte Adds A Different Tactical Option
KONAMI is also expanding the manager side of eFootball with the arrival of Antonio Conte, who becomes the first manager in the game to feature two Link-Up Plays.
Conte brings Touchdown Pass C and One-Two Cut-In B, giving Dream Team players additional ways to build their tactics around their chosen manager.
It adds another layer to the team-building side of eFootball, particularly for players who enjoy experimenting with different systems rather than simply assembling a squad of the biggest names.
A New Season Means New Rewards
The update launches alongside a New Season Campaign running from August 13th to September 3rd.
Players can earn a range of rewards by logging in and completing campaign objectives, including GP, experience points and player development items. There’s also a Special Player Contract up for grabs, allowing players to sign one star from a selection featuring players from FC Barcelona and Manchester United.
The daily reward system is getting a makeover too. KONAMI has teamed up with PlatinumGames to introduce refreshed mini-games alongside Daily Super Play, a timing-based feature that lets players recreate spectacular football moments using a specially selected roster.
Messi And Yamal Take Centre Stage
The new season also brings fresh premium content built around two of eFootball’s biggest ambassadors.
The eFootball: Leo Messi Edition 2027 and Lamine Yamal Edition 2027 are priced at £10.99 on Xbox, while Deluxe versions (Yamal / Messi) cost £16.99.
Both standard editions include an Epic version of their respective star, seven Highlight Player Cards, development items, themed stadium elements and 250 eFootball Coins. The Deluxe editions increase the number of Highlight Player Cards and development items while adding exclusive kits, profile banners and 450 eFootball Coins.
Messi’s edition features his 2020-21 FC Barcelona card, while Yamal’s is based on his 2024-25 FC Barcelona season.
eFootball Remains Free To Play
Despite the arrival of the new paid editions and additional Dream Team content, the core eFootball experience remains free to download and play.
That makes the new season update an easy one to jump into, whether you’re returning after a few months away or simply looking for a new football game to play without committing to a full-price release.
With Custom Tournaments, Fluid Formations, Dynamic Volley, new animations and a fresh campaign all arriving together, eFootball’s latest update gives its 2026/27 season a fairly substantial kick-off. The real test, as ever, will come once players get their hands on the new mechanics and start figuring out which tactical tricks actually work when the competitive matches begin.
