When Hideo Kojima basically left Konami back in 2015, all eyes turned towards Konami regarding whether they could keep the MGS franchise afloat. It is with Metal Gear Survive that they are out to prove that there is still life in the old dog yet – and surely a survival, base building zombie-esque spinoff will do the trick?
Firstly, the crystal headed ‘creatures’ that are the game’s main enemies are technically not zombies, but the basic rambling around they are committed to makes them alike to the undead. Secondly, don’t expect to be playing as Big Boss/Snake, as you will have your own character to venture the barren open-world landscape of Metal Gear Survive with.
Now that is out of the way, and the story that Survive will tell is a tale of how the crew members of Mother Base have been sucked up in a crazy wormhole and transported, along with a ton of Mother Base itself, to an alternative universe full of hostile creatures who are seemingly hell-bent on taking you down. By scavenging for resources, building up a base camp complete with fortifications designed to keep the enemy out, and crafting an array of weapons, and you can work your way to getting back to your own universe – if that is possible.
But with all good survival titles, it isn’t just the simple enemies that pose a threat to your delicate fleshy skin, but also dehydration and basic needs could be more of a killer, emphasising the need to explore the far reaches of the environment to survive.
All this is for the solo player, but if you fancy a bit of fast-paced co-op action then the four player online multiplayer will fix you up. This centers around the base fortification aspect of Metal Gear Survive, as you and your mates invade and defend areas from the ever strengthening horde, focusing on building defences to do so.
Metal Gear Survive has arguably quite a bit to prove, but you can pick it up now from the Microsoft Store for £34.99 on Xbox One, or alternatively on PS4 or PC.
