Metro 2039 – unveiled!

There’s something unmistakable about a Metro reveal – the silence, the dread, the sense that every flicker of light might be your last. With Metro 2039, that feeling returns in force, as 4A Games officially lifts the curtain on the next chapter of its acclaimed post-apocalyptic saga.

Set to launch this winter on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Windows Store), Metro 2039 promises a story-driven single-player FPS that doubles down on the series’ trademark atmosphere – while pushing its narrative into darker, more personal territory.

At A Glance

  • Game: Metro 2039
  • Developer: 4A Games
  • Publisher: Deep Silver
  • Release Window: Winter 2026
  • Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC (Steam, Epic, Windows Store)
  • Genre: Single-player FPS, survival, psychological horror
  • Focus: Story-driven campaign, exploration, stealth and combat

A Return To The Depths Of Moscow

Metro 2039 takes players back beneath the ruins of Moscow, where survivors of nuclear devastation continue to exist in fragile, fractured societies deep within the Metro tunnels.

But this time, things are different.

After years of conflict, factions have been united under a single regime – the Novoreich, led by a figure known as Hunter. Promising salvation on the surface, the regime instead tightens its grip underground, fuelling a world shaped by propaganda, control and fear.

Into this tension steps a new protagonist: The Stranger; a haunted figure pulled back into a place he once escaped, now forced to confront both external threats and his own unraveling psyche.

A More Personal, Psychological Metro

While Metro has always balanced survival and storytelling, Metro 2039 looks to sharpen its psychological edge.

The Stranger isn’t just navigating hostile environments – he’s battling violent nightmares and a shifting perception of reality. That internal conflict feeds directly into the experience, blending horror, tension and narrative choice in a way that feels more intimate than previous entries.

It’s also a notable shift in presentation, with a fully voiced protagonist adding new weight to conversations and decision-making.

Classic Systems, Elevated Presentation

Fans of the series will find familiar ground, but with clear evolution. Expect:

  • Signature Metro weaponry and survival mechanics
  • The iconic wristwatch and gas mask systems
  • A mix of stealth, exploration and high-stakes combat
  • Encounters with deadly mutants lurking in the dark

The reveal footage highlights stunning visual fidelity, blending real-time cinematics with gameplay to create a seamless, immersive experience that leans heavily into atmosphere.

Shaped By Real-World Events

One of the most striking aspects of Metro 2039 is how its development has been influenced by real-world events.

4A Games, a studio with strong Ukrainian roots, has woven themes of conflict, consequence and survival into the narrative more deeply than ever before. The result is a story that remains true to Metro’s DNA, while carrying a sharper, more contemporary edge.

Building On Metro Exodus

The last mainline entry, Metro Exodus, pushed the series beyond the tunnels into wider, more open environments – and was widely praised for doing so.

As we noted in our 4.5/5 review: “Overall, it is an utter treat to revisit Metro Exodus… this is the perfect time to visit it.”

A Journey Back Into The Dark

There’s no shortage of post-apocalyptic shooters, but Metro has always stood apart thanks to its tone – quieter, heavier, and far more oppressive than most. With Metro 2039, that identity feels stronger than ever.

A new protagonist, a world shaped by control and fear, and a renewed focus on psychological storytelling all point toward a game that isn’t just about survival – but about what it costs. And if the early glimpse is anything to go by, this winter’s return to the Metro won’t be an easy one.
