Russia, 2036. In a nation that has been ravaged and torn apart by brutal war, the ensuing apocalypse is nothing short of a nightmare for anyone unfortunate enough to be caught in the nuclear crossfire. However, for Artyom – the now familiar protagonist of Metro – this could be just what he was looking for… a chance to finally escape his hellish past, resurface from the metro and travel to form a new life in the east. But to do this, he must cross the nuclear wasteland, facing off against all new threats and meeting new companions across the way. And he’ll be doing all that in Metro Exodus on Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Playing out as a sandbox title, mixing in a number of linear levels to traverse, Metro Exodus gives fans of the series more gun-slinging, tense and sometimes frightening action that many have come to love from the series. If you wish to survive the nightmarish horrors the nuclear apocalypse throws at you, from freakish mutants to insane human gangs, then from the offset scavenging resources and crafting materials will be top of your agenda. It is through the in-depth crafting system that you will fashion the majority of your weapons, and there are a number to choose from and utilise – from the long range snipers to the more up close and personal affairs.

But then you need some enemies to use these weapons on, and thanks to the day-night cycle, as well as the introduction of dynamically changing seasons, there will always be a unique foe that needs to be put down. Helpfully set out across the course of a full year, Metro Exodus will take you through the seasons, with each bringing with it unique factions, mutants and environmental hazards that you will need to prepare for. Take winter, for example: gas masks will need to be used due to radiation, huge winged mutants are out and about (take a sniper to shoot from afar), whilst the Hanza enemy faction will also be full of bloodlust. Metro Exodus never really cares for how you approach each situation, so suit your weapons and movements to your own playstyle. ‘As long as you aren’t been killed, then play how you want’, seems to be the message.

Tons of weapons, constantly changing foes, a storyline that shapes around your choices offering massive replayability – Metro Exodus certainly has what it takes to keep you playing for months to come. Oh, and the tactical combat and gripping storyline should help too.

If you wish to pick up Metro Exodus, then on Xbox One it’ll be £54.99 (keep in mind it does also have the added promise of Xbox One X Enhanced looks), but the game is also available on PS4 and PC. However, if you want the added extras and wish to go properly deep with Artyom’s latest tale, then the Metro Exodus Expansion Pass brings the opportunity to play Metro 2033 Redux, the remaster of the first entry into the series. That Expansion Pass is available separately for £19.99, but we reckon you should go and grab the Gold Edition for £74.99. Or, if you are feeling super flush, then you could always purchase the Aurora Limited Edition (only in physical form) or the £129.99 Spartan Collector’s Edition – the latter of which comes with an Artyom statue, Spartan Order Patches, a Spartan Order Dog Tag and much more collector goodness. Phew!

Yep, there are a fair few options open to lovers of Metro and Exodus certainly looks to be ready to cater for many tastes. Which will you pick up? Let us know in the comments.
