It’s simple really – transform the world, find loot, and battle through a waterlogged labyrinth. Pretty much everyday occurrences. Or at least it will be when the island-shifting action-roguelike Loot River drops on to Xbox and PC. And yes, it does seem to be as nuts as it sounds.

Announced by straka.studio with the help from SUPERHOT PRESENTS (yep, as the name suggests, these are the team behind SUPERHOT), and Slovak Arts Council, Loot River will see you journeying on down an otherworldly river in search of knowledge and loot.

All set in a series of procedurally-generated labyrinths, Loot River is a dungeon-crawling action-roguelike that somehow manages to combine the tense, real-time combat and dark fantasy stylings of a Dark Souls, with the spatial block-shifting puzzles of Tetris. How does that work? Well, the trailer below these words happily explains all.

For the most part though Loot River will arm you with the power of the Relic, giving opportunities to shift the ground beneath your feet, sliding floating ruins together in a series of tile puzzles. Yet as you venture through these endless catacombs, you’ll also encounter beasts, lost travellers, and bosses. These cosmic grottos offer a wealth of new weapons and gear to discover, as well as unholy knowledge to unearth for permanent upgrades.

Drawn to shards of an unholy relic, wandering nomads have found themselves in a perpetual cycle of life and death, losing their sanity as they journey through endless parallel realities, devouring each other to absorb the knowledge of their fellow travellers. No two journeys are ever the same as countless lost souls float through the Loot River.

“We are deeply interested in games focused on transformation of the world, as it is a powerful mechanic rarely used in gaming,” said Miro Straka. “While my previous games, Euclidean Lands and Euclidean Skies, were centered around rotations, this one explores a more natural mechanic – movement. Loot River offers a similar theme of shaping the world, but it’s a far more kinetic affair that should appeal to fans of games like Dead Cells and Rogue Legacy.”

Loot River will be snaking its way to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam. Let us know what you think of it by posting in the comments.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
