Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on Friday, October 23, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, PC storefronts and Nintendo Switch 2. For Xbox players there are a few decisions that are easier to make now than at midnight on launch day. Here is a checklist, built only on what Activision has published so far.
1. Budget for a Purchase: Game Pass Will Not Cover Launch
This is the first mainline Call of Duty since the Activision acquisition that is not on Game Pass at launch. Both the Xbox store listing and Activision’s pre-order details say so. Microsoft has said eligible Game Pass members can get a discount on the Vault Edition, so check what your membership offers before you pay full price.
2. Buy Digital If You Want the Campaign Early
Campaign Early Access opens on Friday, October 16, for players who digitally pre-order or pre-purchase the Standard or Vault edition. On Xbox that includes the Xbox Series store and the Xbox on PC store. A disc copy is not on the Early Access list.
MW4 supports Xbox Play Anywhere, so one digital purchase on either Xbox store covers both your console and your PC. That is worth knowing if you split your playing time between the living room and a desk.
3. Know What Early Access Covers
Early Access is the campaign only. Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone stay closed until October 23. The story follows Private Park, a young South Korean soldier caught in a full-scale North Korean invasion, with Captain Price running an off-book operation that collides with the war. Settings include the trenches of Korea, New York, Paris and an SAS night raid in Mumbai.
Activision has not published a runtime, so give yourself the whole week rather than one evening if you want to play on a harder difficulty.
4. Check Your Hardware Before Season 1
The premium game is on current-generation hardware only, so Xbox One is not on the MW4 platform list. There is a second change for Xbox One owners: Warzone on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 becomes unplayable from Season 1, which is expected shortly after launch. If a friend in your squad is still on last-gen hardware, now is the time to plan the upgrade, or a different way to play together.
5. Plan Your Launch-Week Grind
Launch day opens Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ together. There are 33 weapons at launch and nine mastery camos, three per mode, with each weapon tracking its camos separately in Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone. The names seen in the beta put Orion Reforged at the top of the Multiplayer track, with Helio closing DMZ and Empyros closing Warzone. Activision has not published a final written list or the challenge requirements yet, so read the unlock text in game before you commit to any grind.
A few habits that save time:
- Level a small group of favourite weapons first. Attachments are shared within a weapon class, and Apex Attachments only unlock on a maxed gun.
- Pick the mode whose camos you actually want. A weapon that never enters DMZ never finishes its DMZ track.
- Finish your Create-a-Class builds before a Classic Prestige, because Classic resets them.
6. Keep Ranked Out of Your First Week
Ranked Play has not been dated. Recent Call of Duty titles opened Ranked a few weeks after launch, with placements and a restricted item list. The 12 core 6v6 launch maps, six from the August test and six new on October 23, are the best practice ground in the meantime.
7. Decide What You Will Hand Off
Launch week is a lot of game for anyone with a full calendar. Some squads divide the work: one player pushes the campaign on Realism while the others level weapons for the group. Others pay for help with the parts they care about least. If that is you, LFCarry’s MW4 services cover the campaign, Soldier Rank and camo tracks, so your own sessions can go to the matches you enjoy.
The Short Version
Budget for a purchase because Game Pass does not cover launch, buy digital if you want the October 16 campaign start, check your squad’s hardware before Season 1, choose which camo track matters to you, and leave Ranked for later. Everything else can wait until the servers open on October 23.
