Montezumas Revenge – The 40th Anniversary Edition

Four decades on from its original release, Montezuma’s Revenge – The 40th Anniversary Edition finally delivers the version its creator always intended.

Now available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, Steam, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch for £12.49, this revived adventure transforms the 1983 classic into a vibrant 2.5D platformer while retaining the precision, charm and danger that made it iconic. There’s Play Anywhere support if you’re an Xbox player too.

Whether you remember the original or you’re discovering it for the first time, this new edition brings Pedro’s perilous journey into a modern era with style.

A Classic Adventure, Rebuilt For A New Generation

When Montezuma’s Revenge launched back in 1983, its sprawling, trap-filled temple felt ahead of its time. And we remember loving it at the time.

The 40th Anniversary Edition goes a step further by rebuilding the entire game from the ground up, allowing players to experience a more fully realised interpretation of Robert Jaeger’s original vision.

Choose Your Explorer

For the first time, players can take on the ruins as either Pedro or his sister Rosita, giving this version a welcome bit of extra character. Both are seasoned explorers, both are determined, and both are probably wishing they packed more rope.

The temple is now larger than ever, featuring 100 handcrafted rooms filled with pitfalls, roving enemies, ancient mysteries and treasures waiting to be reclaimed. Every chamber demands a different approach – careful timing, bold leaps or the classic “hope this platform doesn’t crumble beneath me” energy.

Classic 2D Gameplay, Modern 2.5D Glow

Instead of redesigning the game from scratch, the developers chose a more loving route: preserving the structure and feel of the original while wrapping it in crisp, colourful 3D environments. It’s a blend that works incredibly well.

The controls are snappy, the hazards feel authentic and the entire adventure walks a perfect line between retro nostalgia and modern polish.

Your goal is to make it through the labyrinth with as many valuables as you can carry – and ideally your life. Expect keys to hunt for, enemies to outsmart and a climactic confrontation that closes the door on the temple for good… assuming you get out at all.

I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
