Warner Bros have now dropped the first gameplay trailer for Mortal Kombat 1.

The trailer provides a fresh look at several legendary fighters, along with narrative hints about their backgrounds that offer a glimpse into what the Mortal Kombat 1 story holds.

Liu Kang has restarted history by crafting a New Era for the sake of peace, while Mileena, twin sister of Kitana and rightful heir to Outworld’s throne, has been infected by a dreaded and lethal disease. Lin Kuei warriors and brothers Scorpion and Sub-Zero fight for the future of the clan, while Earthrealm champions Raiden and Kung Lao fight for family and honor. Johnny Cage, who is more concerned with staying relevant in the eyes of his fans, fights for his own vanity. Also joining the main roster is Kenshi Takahashi, who is on a quest to retrieve the revered sword, Sento, and restore his family’s name.

Additionally, the video features various Kameo Fighters, such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Kano, Goro, Kung Lao, Stryker, and Jackson “Jax” Briggs. Each Kameo Fighter is based on a klassic version of the character pulled from over 30 years of Mortal Kombat history and is shown performing offensive and support-based moves, including devastating Fatal Blows, brutal Fatalities, and defensive Breakers.

Mortal Kombat has a long and storied history, providing gamers with a ton of fighting experience for decades. It seems the battling won’t be stopping anytime soon either, as Warner Bros and NetherRealm Studios announce Mortal Kombat 1 – with a release date and various versions to boot.

Following on from the release of Mortal Kombat 11 and the Komplete Kollection that dropped back in November 2020 comes Mortal Kombat 1 as Warner Bros and NetherRealm introduce a reborn MK universe, one created by the Fire God Liu Kang, one that features some newly reimagined versions of the iconic characters we have known and loved.

The rebirth will occur on September 19th 2023 as Mortal Kombat 1 releases on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC. And yep, that means it’s looking unlikely you’ll be able to play this on Xbox One.

When it does arrive, you should expect to find NetherRealm pushing out a genre-defining Story Mode, full of cinematic narrative, unexpected twists, classic rivalries and original backstories. A whole range of characters will be involved too – Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, and many others.

Further, Mortal Kombat 1 will also add in Kameo Fighters, a unique roster of partner characters that can assist during matches, creating expanded gameplay possibilities for players.

“With Mortal Kombat 1 we are bringing a reimagined universe to the legendary franchise which has captivated gamers for more than 30 years and continues to top itself,” said David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Games. “The talented team at NetherRealm Studios continues to push the series forward in bold ways that have consistently expanded the global audience, and we believe Mortal Kombat 1 will continue to attract new players as well as thrill our core fans.”

“Mortal Kombat 1 marks a new beginning for the franchise and we couldn’t be more excited to share this original storyline and fresh take on classic characters with our fans,” said Ed Boon, Chief Creative Officer, NetherRealm Studios and Co-Creator of Mortal Kombat. “We’re also introducing our Kameo Fighter system which brings a unique roster of partner characters into the mix, and we are looking forward to showing this feature as well as more new elements of the game very soon.”

Sounds good eh? Well, it gets better as Mortal Kombat 1 will release in various flavours, with a Standard Edition, Premium Edition and Kollector’s Edition all in hand. Details of those as follows…

  • Mortal Kombat 1 Standard Edition will be available physically and digitally on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC, including Steam and Epic Games Store.
  • Mortal Kombat 1 Premium Edition will be available physically and digitally on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store) and will include all Standard Edition content, along with the Kombat Pack, early access to the game beginning Sept. 14, and 1,250 Dragon Krystals (in-game currency). The Kombat Pack will feature a Johnny Cage character skin with the likeness of famed actor and martial artist, Jean-Claude Van Damme (available at launch), early access to six new playable characters (available post-launch), and five new Kameo Fighters (available post-launch).
  • Mortal Kombat 1 Kollector’s Edition will be available physically at select retailers on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only and will include all Premium Edition content, and early access, along with a 16.5-inch Liu Kang sculpture designed by COARSE and an inspired Liu Kang in-game character skin, three exclusive art prints, a steel case, and 1,450 additional Dragon Krystals (2,700 total).

You can pre-order Mortal Kombat 1 from May 19th, with Shang Tsung being sent back as an in-game playable character for those dropping cash early. Those pre-orders will also unlock the Mortal Kombat 1 Beta , coming in August 2023.

Give the trailer below a watch and let us know if the rebirthing of Mortal Kombat with Mortal Kombat 1 is of interest.
