Got a survival horror itch that needs a little scratch? Reckon a folklore-inspired tale will be able to fix it? Hidden Fields and MWM Interactive are looking to sort you out this March with release of Mundaun on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Created in a hand-pencilled visual style, and pushing forth with survival horror mechanics that has been inspired by folktales that have been passed through the Swiss Alps, Mundaun will transport players off to a ominous valley as the one man studio at Hidden Fields attempts to showcase something pretty special.

Due to release on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC come March 16th 2021, Mundaun will put players slap bang in the middle of a journey of a young man who travels to a dark, secluded valley of the Alps to face off with a malevolent entity that resides there, all in hope that he can uncover the mystery of his grandfather’s death. Published by MWM Interactive you can get a taste for the action ahead of time by taking in the first episode of a bi-weekly series of behind-the-scenes videos showcasing the creative development process behind the game, along with the folklore and real life inspirations behind the game. The first episode – The Creation Process – is available for viewing right below these words.

“It’s exciting to finally have a release date and share the experience of Mundaun with the passionate community that has been following the game over the past several years,” said Hidden Fields founder and developer Michel Ziegler. “The Alps hold a special importance to me and everything from the game’s story to the hand-pencilled characters and environments celebrate the remarkable culture of the Swiss region of Grisons. I’m glad to have worked with MWMi to bring this project to the finish line and look forward to players uncovering Mundaun’s secrets.”

Mundaun has been in development since way back in 2014 coming about via the creative mind of the one-man developer, Michel Ziegler. Having spent summers in the Swiss Alps as a child, Ziegler has an adoration for the region, including the culture and its various folktales passed down for generations, yet Mundaun plays on the darker side of things; a survival horror game that follows Curdin who travels to the Swiss town of Mundaun to learn more about the mysterious circumstances behind his grandfather’s death, and soon discovers that something diabolical is haunting the town’s residents.

Mundaun promises much, not least a journey which will see players attempting to solve intricate puzzles to uncover the town’s secrets, while avoiding sinister characters that trigger the game’s fear system, a “cause-and-effect” feature which disorients players when facing dangerous situations.

We’ll be sure to remind you when that March 16th release date rolls around and you can get the chance to play Mundaun on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch or PC via Steam. If you prefer the latter option it’s good to see a bit of wishlisting action going on.

For now though, enjoy the trailer.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
