Myst is so long in the tooth that it helped to drive consumer adoption of the new – yes, new – CD-ROM format in gaming. Now though, nearly 30 years after it first launched into the gaming world we are finding a rebuilt Myst being pushed out to Xbox, playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S AND making the most of the power of Xbox Game Pass for good measure.

Myst is an utter classic – there’s no two ways about it. After first launching way back in 1993, and then being released on the major systems of the time over the course of the next few years, it’s a game that many would have spent time with. Here and now though Myst has become available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, having been rebuilt for the modern audience by the Cyan team. Still, it’s a game you MUST play. Either again, or for the first time ever.

Available to purchase and download right now on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, a purchase of Myst will set you back £24.99 in cold hard cash. But it’s also present via the brilliance of the Xbox Game Pass scheme, letting subscribers dip their toe into the eerie adventures as and when they see fit.

So what is Myst? Well, if you’re kicking around the middle-ages of life like us then you’ll know exactly what it brings. But those of the younger, newer, fresher generations should be aware that this is a first person adventure like no other. And now that it’s on Xbox, it’s quite possibly better than ever.

You see the Cyan team have picked up everything that was good about Myst, and just built on it with new art, new audio, new interactions and the randomisation of the puzzles. It could well be the reimagining that makes this so damn appealing, or it could just be the chance to head back to Myst Island after all these years is hitting our nostalgic needs. Hell, it might even be that we’ve got some glorious Ray Tracing to enjoy too.

Whatever it is, you can be sure we’ll be dropping a review of this newly improved, visual masterpiece in the coming days – just bear with us as we wander the world in awe once more.

If you wish to check it out for yourself you’ll find Myst on the Xbox Store for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. With the inclusion on Xbox Game Pass, there’s absolutely no reason why you wouldn’t want to take a little trip to Myst Island.

Game Description:

Welcome to Myst: a starkly beautiful island, eerily tinged with mystery and shrouded in intrigue. Journey to Myst Island and other stunning, long dormant locations – called “Ages”- and begin to unravel the mystery you have been thrust into. As you learn what happened on the island, you will find that you are playing a key role in an epic story whose ending has not yet been written. Explore deeper connections in these stunning and surreal Ages, uncover a story of ruthless family betrayal, and make choices that will affect both you, and the world of Myst itself. Cyan, the indie studio that created the beloved classic, has reimagined Myst. Built from the ground up, Myst is teeming with new art, new sound, re-imagined interactions, and even optional puzzle randomization. Finally… the highly anticipated modern Myst experience has arrived!

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore. Gamertag is neil363, feel free to add me to your list.
