Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island Review

-

The exploits of the Greek gods have always provided fertile ground for game developers. We’ve witnessed their epic adventures in games like God of War, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and Hades, to name a few.

These stories, replete with supernatural powers, heroic quests, and mythical creatures, offer a wealth of inspiration for interactive entertainment. But what happens when these mighty deities find themselves stranded on a Greek island, stripped of their memories and indulging in copious amounts of ambrosia?

This is the intriguing premise explored in Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island, an engaging adventure game that invites you to embark on a relaxing journey through a world of mythology and self-discovery.

An island to explore

You assume the role of Alex, a British tourist in her mid-twenties on a tour of Greece. While sailing with a confident captain, her boat is caught in a storm and shipwrecked on a mysterious island adorned with ancient ruins and enigmatic statues. When one of these statues, a self-proclaimed Oracle, addresses Alex by name, she realises she’s stumbled into a realm beyond the ordinary. The Oracle tasks Alex with finding the Greek gods scattered across the island, all suffering from amnesia, and helping them rediscover their identities. Only then can Alex return home.

The game’s writing is witty, whilst the premise feels refreshingly original. The portrayal of the gods as ordinary islanders, despite their divine appearances, adds a layer of humour and relatability. They grapple with everyday problems and anxieties, making them surprisingly relatable despite their mythical status. The heart of the game lies in its storytelling and the gradual unraveling of the central mystery.

Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island is played in the third-person, with Alex exploring the island, gathering ambrosia, and interacting with the gods. To gain their trust and friendship, you’ll complete tasks for them, such as feeding birds for Hades or helping Hermes locate his misplaced sandals. The ambrosia you collect can be exchanged for upgrades from the gods, enhancing Alex’s abilities and aiding her in her quest.

Hermes needs your help

A unique mechanic involves using your in-game phone as a radar to locate hidden memories scattered across the island. This treasure-hunting aspect adds a layer of exploration and discovery, motivating you to uncover every hidden memory fragment. It’s pretty great, complete with an addictive feeling that will ensure you’ll want to collect them all. It’s like the Pokemon effect…

While the island might initially feel a bit disorienting, you’ll soon become familiar with its layout and landmarks. New areas gradually open up as you progress, offering a sense of discovery and progression. The puzzles are generally straightforward, creating a relaxing and accessible experience suitable for players of all ages. While the core gameplay loop might become repetitive after a few hours, the engaging narrative and interactions with the gods should well be able to keep you invested.

The visuals are also very pleasant, running a pastel colour palette and a warm, inviting aesthetic. The character designs, particularly the interpretations of the Greek gods, are creative and expressive, whilst the animated sequences that accompany each recovered memory are a delightful touch.

The soundtrack features acoustic guitar melodies that evoke a sense of tranquility and relaxation, perfectly capturing the island’s laid-back atmosphere. You can also discover cassette tapes hidden throughout the island, each containing a new musical track to enjoy. However, for me, the lack of voice acting is noticeable, and the occasional gasps and grunts used to convey emotions can become repetitive, distracting and a little bit odd.

A lovely relaxing experience

Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island is a game best enjoyed at a leisurely pace, margarita in hand. There’s no sense of urgency or threat, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the island’s tranquil atmosphere and the unfolding narrative.

The concept is refreshing, and the process of collecting the gods’ memories is surprisingly addictive. And even if you do find the gameplay loop to be somewhat repetitive, the engaging writing and charming visuals should ensure this to be a worthwhile adventure.
