A Slam Dunk for the Franchise?
If you’re into sports of any kind, then you will know all about hopes and heartaches. The start of any new season in your favourite pastime brings about a massive sense of optimism. You dream about doing better, about winning, about having the best players, about winning trophies. You can be the best, why not? Then the heartache appears, and you swear you’re never going to go through this again… but you do, because you love it.
I think those same feelings are applicable to our sports video game franchises as well. And yep, that includes basketball, as we hope to become the very finest of ballers.
NBA 2K26 is back again, and that sense of optimism is here. This time, it could be justified.
Content-Rich, Microtransaction-Heavy
Whatever you think of games like NBA 2K26 and titles like EA Sports FC with their microtransactions and repeatable gameplay, they do give you a lot of bang for your buck; content rich, tiding you over for months on end.
NBA 2K gives you a frightening number of modes when you eventually get to the menus, after having to sign up and agree to more disclosure statements than you may wish to. But where do you start? Everyone will have their favourite mode, and they might just play that for the season. Others could well dip in and out of everything on offer.
Out of Bounds: A New Career Mode Story
For me? I started with the career mode, which is called “Out of Bounds,” and it tells a new ‘rags to riches’ story in the basketball world.
Here you play as MP, a young basketball player who you can design as you would like and even scan your own face if you wish. MP rises from a high school player to getting an agent and playing basketball in Spain, all before being drafted by the NBA. This mode is great, and I liked the story, with some good writing and some exciting curveballs. You do interviews, write online blogs, and get involved in endorsements.
However, it is always online, which is a bit annoying because if your connection drops mid-game, then you have to start it again. It’s also sometimes frustrating when you get subbed off while you’re winning, only to go back in with the team losing, left to pull off a miracle to get a win. You need that win to progress the story too, so there were times when I was repeating a game a few times.
ProPLAY and Precision
The gameplay itself has had a revamp in NBA 2K26. The ProPLAY motion engine is using some magic here, layering real-life basketball footage over the gameplay movement and animations. Movement does feel more fluid and dynamic than when I last played an NBA game – NBA 2K25 – but for fans, it’s nice that each player seems to have different play styles that fans of the NBA will recognise.
Shooting has also had a revamp, going back to basics in the process. You get a meter that comes up when you press the shoot button, and you need to hit the green bit of that meter to make a successful shot. The more difficult the team you face, the harder it is to complete a layup and hit that green marker. Go online against tougher opponents, and you will need to be precise with your attacking, and that’s where the challenge lies. I enjoyed shooting much more than before and found it engaging and fun to play with the different combinations.
Beyond the Court
The City is back and has had a glow up in terms of what’s on offer. It’s full of people, and it looks a bit like Lakeside (a shopping centre off the M25 here in London). You can buy stuff here and get involved in minigames with other online players. There are weekly challenges, and you can even take in some go-karting and skate around the place if you like. And MyTEAM is there again, and it’s one of those modes that I don’t enjoy that much. It’s about buying packs and collecting cards while putting together your best team to play in competitive games online and in single-player. It’ll be fine for many, but it’s not something that interests me.
MyGM mode is very good. Here you take part in the management of the team and all the things that entails, like staff involvement, player picking, and hitting your goals. There are scenarios to play in the off-season and then the big job of leading your team to glory. This is a mode you can sink many hours into, and it is rewarding and engaging. The WNBA is also included here and works well. There are other modes, of course, from Quick Play to the 2KTV channel.
Visuals and Vocal Brilliance
Visually, NBA 2K26 is very impressive on the court. Shiny floors, great crowd animations, and high-fidelity player movement are the key takeaways. I loved the look of the game, and the character likenesses are spot on. Hair physics are very impressive as well. In some parts of the story mode, the interiors of flats or offices don’t look as good as perhaps they should, but I guess the focus is the on court stuff, as well as the players.
The soundtracks and playlists in this game are impressive, as they always are in the NBA 2K series, with an all-star cast of huge artists and newbies. The sound on the court is excellent, where you can hear every squeal of a trainer and every roar of the crowd in full audio brilliance. I always like the commentary in these games because it never stops and feels like storytelling where your player is a big part of it. It is all so authentic and adds to the atmosphere of the big game. In the story mode, the voice-over actors do a superb job of bringing all the characters to life, including MP and the supporting cast.
The Court Shines Again
It’s always good to take to the court again, and that’s true once more with NBA 2K26. I very much enjoy the shooting aspects, and the fun that brings, but on the whole, the game feels engaging and dynamic. “Out of Bounds” is a great story mode and there are enough other modes present that it can all feel a bit overwhelming. Each player will have their own personal favourite, but for me, it’s the story mode and GM mode that win the day. The ‘always online’ thing can be a bit of a pain, and there is no doubt that the spectre of microtransactions is constantly lurking if you want to fast-track your progress, but overall, NBA 2K26 is a game that shines. It is an excellent new addition to the franchise.
