Need for Speed Lockdown – harnessing the Most Wanted

Get ready to relive the thrill of high-stakes street racing with a nostalgic twist as Need for Speed Unbound Prepares for Lockdown with some Most Wanted gameplay.

Criterion Games is dropping Need for Speed Unbound Vol. 9: Prepare for Lockdown, a major update inspired by the iconic Need for Speed: Most Wanted.

Available today on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, this update injects a dose of adrenaline-fueled action and introduces a groundbreaking addition to the franchise: motorcycles.

Lockdown: A New Multiplayer Extraction Mode

Vol. 9 introduces Lockdown, a high-stakes PvPvE multiplayer mode where crews of up to three players compete against rival teams to secure valuable loot and escape the Lockdown Zone. It follows on from the Cops vs Robbers gameplay of Season 8 nicely.

Complete contracts, break into secure areas, and navigate treacherous terrain as you race to reach the extraction truck and claim victory.

Most Wanted Nostalgia

This update is packed with nods to the beloved Need for Speed: Most Wanted, including the opportunity to acquire Razor’s custom BMW M3 GTR ’05 and 14 other iconic cars from the Blacklist.

Relive the thrill of high-speed pursuits, intense rivalries, and the adrenaline rush of outsmarting the cops in this nostalgia-fueled update.

Features That Will Push You to the Limit

  • Lockdown Mode: Experience a new PvPvE extraction-based mode inspired by Need for Speed: Most Wanted.
  • Motorcycles: Ride the BMW S 1000 RR 2019, the first playable motorbike in Need for Speed history.
  • New Playlists: Compete in 14 new playlists with over 60 routes and event configurations, including motorcycle-exclusive events, Most Wanted-inspired races, and Drift Pro challenges.
  • Speed Pass: Progress through a new Speed Pass and unlock a variety of rewards, including the fully customisable Subaru Impreza WRX STI ’99 and Honda Integra Type R ’98.

A Need for Speed Unbound Experience

As we noted in our review of Need for Speed Unbound, the game successfully recaptures the “glory days of the Need for Speed franchise” with its “strong upgrade mechanic, fun races and great set pieces, not to mention some intense police chases.

Vol. 9: Prepare for Lockdown builds upon this foundation, adding new layers of excitement and a nostalgic twist that will appeal to longtime fans. And of course, with Most Wanted being amongst the very best of all Need for Speed games, the draw should be there.

Developer Quote

We hope Vol. 9 sparks excitement among our players by blending nostalgia and iconic Most Wanted vibes with new experiences and innovative gameplay,” said John Stanley, Senior Creative Director at Criterion Games. “As we celebrate the incredible milestone of the franchise’s 30th anniversary, this volume represents the climactic peak of our live service journey anchored on continuous improvement to deliver the ultimate, all-in-one Need for Speed experience.

Need for Speed Unbound Vol. 9: Prepare for Lockdown is available today on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Grab a download from the likes of the Xbox Store if you fancy trying to embrace the thrill of high-stakes racing, master the art of motorcycle riding, and experience the ultimate Need for Speed adventure.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
