Neon Abyss Brings Colourful Roguelike Mayhem to Consoles, Xbox Game Pass and PC

Let’s face it, the term “roguelike” is now just as overused as the term “metroidvania”. And yet, it’s a term which singlehandedly describes what you can expect. Roguelike games punish failure, often stripping you of progress, collected items and patience. Among these games are the likes of Binding of Isaac and Enter the Gungeon, to the latter of which Neon Abyss bears a close resemblance to. Known for publishing Worms and Overcooked, Team17 brings the vibrant roguelike action-platformer Neon Abyss to your favourite console, Xbox Game Pass, and PC.

In Neon Abyss, you’ll take control of a character from the so-called Grim Squad. Neon Abyss features a boatload of characters, as well as numerous items and weapons to customize them with. Choose a character and jump into the frantic 2D action, defeat nimble enemies and humongous bosses, and do your best to evade a rain of projectiles heading your way. Wield an array of powerful weapons, from handguns and assault rifles to destructive rocket launchers, each with its own unique abilities and intricacies.

Show those bosses who’s boss by changing your character’s attire. Want to be a vengeful bunny? No problem. How about a bear’s head and a pacifier? Or better yet, wear a yellow helmet with cat ears and make your character look like a male reincarnation of Celty from the hit anime show Durarara!! Call forth pets to aid you in battles, such as an Alien, a Zombie or an Orange. Yeah, an Orange!

Neon Abyss will challenge your platforming and reaction skills. Every death and decision alter the dungeon and challenges you’re going to face, making every experience unique.

Features include:

  • Evolving Dungeon – With each run, you will be able to unlock new rooms, items, bosses, special rules and even new endings! This means each dungeon is unique and expandable, being tailored to your own specific playstyle.
  • Unlimited Item Synergies – As you progress through each dungeon, random item drops will be key in helping you infiltrate the Abyss and these passive effects can stack between every item. With no limit to how many can apply; a wide variety of combinations will make each run unique.
  • Hatch and Evolve Pets – If you need some company on your journey into the depths of the abyss, or just some additional firepower or assistance, eggs can be found which will turn into a random pet that has a special ability and will evolve the longer you survive.
  • Mini-games – Take a short break from slaying minions and take part in random mini-games that will also bag you some loot! Jump into Piano Performances, Meditation Challenge, Dance Competitions, and more – staying alive just got a lot more interesting!

Neon Abyss is available for download from the Xbox Store for Xbox One, PlayStation Store for PS4 and Nintendo eShop for those preferring the Nintendo Switch life. It is also over on Steam. Purchasing the game will set you back £15.99 which, based on early impressions, is totally worth it. Better still is the fact that it is available on Xbox Game Pass. However, should you drop the cash direct will find the Neon Abyss Launch Edition includes the addition of The Lovable Rogues Pack too. This adds two new colourful rogues into the mix, with both Saya and Amir becoming yours.

However, to find out what we ultimately think of Neon Abyss, keep a close eye for our upcoming review.

Edit: Our review of Neon Abyss on Xbox One is now live.

Game Description:

Neon Abyss is a frantic, roguelike action-platformer where you run ‘n’ gun your way into the Abyss as part of the Hades formed ‘Grim Squad’. Featuring unlimited item synergies and a unique dungeon evolution system, each run diversifies the experience and every choice alters the ruleset. Get ready to unleash hell! About the game Combining furious run ‘n’ gun action and deep, roguelike mechanics, Neon Abyss pits you as a member of the ‘Grim Squad’ – a task force set-up by Hades himself to infiltrate the Abyss and defeat the New Gods. Death is not the end as every time you die, you’ll find yourself more empowered than before.
