It’s been a while since the heyday of the endless runner, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a place on console for the madness that they bring. And with the launch of Top Run on Xbox One, you can be sure that you’ll have the chance to feel the need… for speed.
Available right now as a digital download on Xbox One, Top Run is nothing to do with the hit 1980’s film that saw Tom Cruise star as Maverick and take the skies, instead placing it’s feet firmly on the ground and seeing the star of the show – the slightly less excitingly named, Kevin – work his way through a city full of dangerous foes.
This city is certainly one of intrigue though, and with a wingman in tow – your dog, Buddy, no less – you and Kevin will need to run, run and run some more all in an attempt to nail high scores and look great doing so. With multiple superpowers to utilise, collectibles to grab in order to upgrade your abilities, and enough customisation to ensure that hours of fun can be had, Top Run on Xbox One certainly looks to fill a slight gap in the endless running market.Â
With more than 100 missions to hand, a ton of classic 1980’s themed skins and easy to action in-game cheats helping you out when the going gets tough, there should be a lot to like about this runner. Particularly when you consider the super cheap price tag that it is coming with – just £4.19 is all you need to shell out. All is of seems to be powered by a rather classic, rather neon-filled art style and it is this which should be an immediate draw to many. Especially when you take into account the huge amount of explosions and old school effects that it delivers.Â
Features include:
- Unique oldschool style – It has everything we love: neon, pixel art, a bit of outrun, tiny piece of synthwave, scanlines, VHS effects. What else anyone would want in a retro arcade game?
- Amazing music – If you love 1980s then you definitely love good music. We’ve got professional soundtrack for you from a great synthwave artist – Beckett. That’s why we recommend you play with headphones to have a fully immersive experience.
- Charismatic characters – Kevin: a typical 80s kid who mutated and gained superpowers Buddy: best dog companion you’ve ever had (also very cute) Friends: save your friends Joy, Darryl and Ben and they will help you on your dangerous journey. Just shake your phone to use their super powers.
- Different modes – Normal mode: fun, challenging and addictive but not the hardest game ever. Hardcore mode: run, survive, test your reflexes (the way arcade is supposed to be played). Rage mode: what others call zen we call rage, let your inner anger out!
Got a spare few quid and wish to give it a go? You’ll find Top Run on Xbox One available this very minute from the Xbox Store. Hit it up. And make sure to keep an eye out for our upcoming review too – it’ll be sure to let you know whether Top Run is writing cheques that the gameplay can’t cash.
