Never Look Back – Stone Run Is Out Now

Stone Run – out now on Xbox and PC

There’s one particularly important thing to remember in Stone Run: don’t look back.

You won’t have much time to admire the scenery anyway, with a giant rolling stone constantly chasing you through a hand-drawn arcade world filled with unpredictable obstacles. The fast-paced retro experience is available for £4.19 on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with three versions available.

At A Glance

  • Game: Stone Run
  • Developer: Cool-Two Interactive
  • Publisher: Desert Water Games
  • Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC
  • Price: £4.19
  • Genre: Retro Arcade / Reflex

Keep Running And Don’t Look Back

In Stone Run, something very large is rolling after you, and stopping to find out how close it is probably isn’t going to help.

Instead, you’ll need to react quickly, dodge whatever obstacles appear in your path and keep moving as the game steadily puts your reflexes under pressure. The unpredictable nature of those obstacles means there isn’t much room for switching off.

It’s helped by the hand-drawn presentation, which gives Stone Run a distinctive look, feeling like an interactive cartoon. It’s a colourful change of pace from the usual pixel-heavy retro arcade aesthetic, while the straightforward chase provides the reason to keep coming back and trying to improve.

How Long Can You Stay Ahead?

With its focus firmly on reaction speed, Stone Run is all about seeing how far you can get before the boulder catches up. There are no complicated systems to learn or huge worlds to explore – just you, a rapidly approaching stone and a growing collection of obstacles between you and disaster.

At £4.19 from the Xbox Store, Stone Run is keeping things simple. If the idea of an arcade game built around the rather sensible rule of never looking back sounds appealing, there could be some frantic runs ahead.

If you’re sold on the chase, there are three versions to tempt you in – optimised for Xbox Series X|S, another that is playable on Xbox One, and then a Windows PC drop.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
