Up Next – A look at the Xbox One games out in August 2017

-

The quiet month of July is now behind us and once more the video gaming industry is ready to build the hype for a whole host of new games once more. August may not officially kick off the madness that comes with September and October, but this one still has a number of titles well worth getting excited about. From racers to open-world affairs, and a bit of everything in between, check out the games which will be appearing in stores near you throughout the month of August 2017.

Of course, should you prefer not to buy physical, and would rather become one of those who relies fully on digital gaming, then we hugely advise you to head on over to CDKeys prior to putting your order in and picking up some of their super cheap Xbox Live Credit.

The Escapists 2

The popular prison escape sim is back on Xbox One, following the original The Escapists and The Walking Dead standalone title. As with The Escapists, which gripped Xbox audiences back in 2015, The Escapists 2 will see your customized con attempt to escape one of a number of prisons that you have had the unfortunate experience of being enrolled in. In order to do so though, you’ll need to utilise an array of methods from carefully crafting a plan and creating items, to knocking out every guard in the complex with the new craft-able Taser!

The most notable thing absent from the original title was the inclusion of multiplayer, but Team17 have listened and, lo and behold, local and online co-op and versus modes will be added to The Escapists 2, allowing you and up to three buddies to explore and escape a prison in drop in/out multiplayer.

With a new, rethought combat system utilising light and heavy attacks, blocking and locking on, and a new crafting system allowing you to create the number of useful items in the game – as well as many maps and modes all wrapped up with a new art-style while retaining the cutesy pixelated theme – if you liked The Escapists, the sequel looks to expand and improve.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Legacy

If you’re a Naruto fan, then this month is going to be a good one. Not only is the Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy arriving digitally, delivering the critically acclaimed Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 1, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 and Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Full Burst, but to accompany the Trilogy’s release will be Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Legacy.

This pack will be available both digitally and physically, and contains four games – Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 1, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Full Burst AND Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 Road to Boruto.

If you pop yourself down to the shops for the disc version, you’ll found an exclusive metal case, a Naruto art book and a bonus anime disc.

What’s not to like?

Killing Floor 2

Sometimes you just want to blow some monsters to pieces – and Killing Floor 2 will let you do just that.

Debuting on PS4 and PC in November 2016, with early acess going back to the previous year, Killing Floor 2 will follow the story of mercenaries, soldiers and civilians as they attempt to stop the outbreak of Zed – murderous clones created by rogue elements of the Horzine Corporation. Being dropped into Zed infested areas across Europe, you will have to do whatever it takes to kill the numerous Zeds. Whether you do this by using standard guns or by the new weapons introduced to the Xbox One version of the game is up to you, but you can be sure to have fun with, the Free Thrower (which sprays out liquid nitrogen, enabling you to shatter your enemies), the HZ12 Shotgun or the Centerfire Lever Action Rifle.

The Xbox One version of Killing Floor 2 will include all the previously released DLC packs for the game, including The Tropical Bash and The Descent content, as well as parts of the new Summer Sideshow content pack. Furthermore, if the co-operative play found in the main game and added Survival mode (a mode with up to six-players similar to COD’s Zombies mode) doesn’t appeal to you, then a 6v6 PVP mode is also present, where a team of humans fight a team of Zeds.

Ark: Survival Evolved

Surprisingly, despite being available for Xbox One players since December 2015, the action-adventure survival cult hit Ark: Survival Evolved will be officially released in all its glory this month. Plenty of Xbox Game Preview players have already jumped on to the hype train of Ark and could have been playing it for over a year now, but now everyone can join in with the full release, crafting a whole array of tools, weapons and shelters to avoid or take down the prehistoric monsters of the game. Anyone fancy riding a T-Rex with their mates?

Once you first land on the mysterious world of Ark: Survival Evolved your priorities will have to be building shelter and staying well fed, but after hours of commitment you may find yourself with some machine guns, rideable dinos and a fortress to protect yourself from other players – provided you don’t get your head munched of by an angry sabre-toothed cat before that!

Sonic Mania

What has happened to everyone’s favourite blue hedgehog? The third dimension hasn’t been particularly kind to ol’ Sonic, so Head Cannon and PagodaWest Games, along with publishers Sega, are taking it back to tried and tested 2D Sonic.

With both new landscapes to dash across as well as re-imagined classics such as the iconic Green Hill Zone, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles (with all their abilities) will be available to control in this blast to the past that will appeal to Sonic veterans and newbies alike, attempting to defeat Dr. Eggman and his minions. To capture the graphics of the Sega Genesis, Sonic Mania will be played out in the retro pixelated style the old Sonic titles had, and Tee Lopes has composed that music that every gamer can instantly recognise… try getting Green Hill Zone tune out of your head anytime soon!

Agents of Mayhem

When the world’s nations are being threatened by annihilation by L.E.G.I.O.N. (the League of Evil Gentlemen Intent on Obliterating Nations), there is simply one team you can call. Enter the Agents of M.A.Y.H.E.M. (Multinational AgencY Hunting Evil Masterminds), to arrive in futuristic Seoul, South Korea, and stop L.E.G.I.O.N. in its tracks.

Comprising of icons from the stupidly crazy, hugely addictive Saints Row series, such as former Saint Pierce Washington under the alias ‘Kingpin’, as well as some new faces like Fortune and Hollywood, each of the 12 agents will have a different weapon, skills and abilities to deploy in battle – with one hopefully suiting your exact playstyle. In addition, each agent will have their own Mayhem supermove, ranging from stun drones to explosions, all aiding you in colourful, quick combat. Agents of Mayhem doesn’t do the standard double-jump either, instead bringing in a TRIPLE jump to help you traverse the open-world Seoul.

The various missions making up the story of AoM involve unlock missions which give you new agents to control and personal missions which see you dipping into the backstory of the original 12 agents. You will also be able to customize your characters, as well as unlock new mods and gadgets for further fun.

Oh, and anyone who pre-orders Agents of Mayhem will have a 13th agent added to the roster – the king of badassery, Johnny Gat himself!

F1 2017

With this year’s F1 season in full spin and the competition fierce, what better time is there to release the official game of the FIA Formula One World Championship than now, with F1 2017 from Codemasters?

The current racers such as British Superstar, Lewis Hamilton, and the fiery German, Sebastian Vettel, along with perfect replicas of the cars from the current F1 season will be present in the game. All the usual circuits will be available to race around in the in-depth Career mode, Championship mode and other offline and online modes, whilst a further four smaller circuits have been added, such as Silverstone Short, for a quick hit of racing adrenaline.

But for the first time since F1 2013, an array of classic cars will be joining the fray, such as the 1992 Williams FW14B and 2004 Ferrari F2004. If you like your racing history, F1 2017 has you covered whether it be in the ten year Career Mode, new ‘Championships’ mode or any of the enhanced multiplayer modes.

F1 2017 is shaping up to be an extremely realistic, exhilarating Formula One simulation.

Madden NFL 18

If you prefer your football the American way – as opposed to the proper way 😉 – then Madden NFL 18 will soon be here in all its glory.

Aside from introducing new gameplay features such as target passing, three new playstyles and AI customization to make your match that bit more realistic, Madden NFL 18 follows in the footsteps of FIFA 17 (proper football!) in introducing a story mode to the series. Your decisions in the Longshot story mode will shape the career of forgotten prospect Devin Wade as he attempts to make it in American football. Alternatively, the returning Franchise Mode will let you play through an entire Madden season with your favourite team.

The popular Madden Ultimate Team is also being improved, with cooperative 3v3 online matches in the MUT Squads mode. MUT will see you open packs and gradually improve your team to be the best in the business – and if you fancy a kickstart to your ultimate team then the G.O.A.T Edition of the game will reward you with one of five Elite G.O.A.T players, 12 Squad Packs, 2500 Contracts and one uniform pack to utilise.

XCOM 2: War of the Chosen

If you believe XCOM 2 has thrown everything it ever has at you, you might be right – but not for much longer.

The War of the Chosen expansion to the turn based tactics title tells the story of ADVENT releasing the enemy force the “Chosen”, in an attempt to recapture the Commander.

The player – that’ll be you – will meet three new resistance factions, each with a new hero to add to your squad, as you partake in new missions set across new environments. You’ll need to do so in order to re-liberate Earth with XCOM, with all this just adding depth to the strategic gameplay of XCOM 2 more than it already has.

Dead Alliance

The hype around zombies has been pretty high for a while now, and the latest zombie shooter to drop onto the market is Dead Alliance, a multiplayer FPS set in a post apocalyptic wasteland where former military bases are the only major urban areas.

The difference from most zombie shooters, however, is the way you go about your main goal of taking down rival military forces and capturing bases. While the zombies will be hostile and get in the way of your progress, through the use of pheromones and gadgets you will be able to harness the power of the zombies, using them as attack dogs to see off your foes. This unique feature will keep you on your toes at all times, as you will have to worry about the hostile humans in the environment as well as those pesky zombies.

So there we have it – a fairly decent month with a good many titles to get involved in. When you factor in the numerous digital only games that will also be arriving, it’s far to say that August 2017 will be remembered as a good one. But which of the games will you be picking up? Don’t forget to let us know!

I'm an avid gamer who will play pretty much anything... but stick an open world or adventure game in front of me and I'm more than happy.

Decent month in comparison to previous Augusts! Used to always be a really quiet month, encouraging kids to play outside and/or saving the releases for the Christmas release windows

Think they are both now September. Although with the delays on both already, wouldn’t be surprised to see those change again.
