Humanity Lost – The Mechs Didn’t
The setup behind NITRO GEN OMEGA is bleak, but stylishly so. Humanity has already been pushed out by rogue AI and scavenging war machines, leaving the world below in ruins while the last surviving cities cling to life high above the wastelands. Players step into the role of a mercenary commander travelling the open world in an airship alongside a crew of pilots, taking contracts, hunting resources and trying to stay alive one battle at a time.
And naturally, giant customisable mechs are involved. Why wouldn’t they be?
Tactical Battles With Anime Energy
Battles play out through a cinematic turn-based system where players plan actions during a dedicated strategy phase before watching the entire encounter unfold in fully animated sequences. Every pilot controls a specific subsystem of the mech too, creating a layered management system where timing and teamwork become crucial.
That means one crew member might focus on dodging incoming fire while another handles weapons, coolant systems or special tactical abilities.
The Timeline System seems especially important, with every action affecting the overall flow of battle. And because pilots can panic, suffer injuries or completely break down mid-fight, things can apparently spiral very quickly if plans start falling apart.
Life On The Airship Matters Too
Outside of combat, NITRO GEN OMEGA spends plenty of time aboard your travelling airship.
Pilots bond, argue, train, relax and slowly develop relationships with one another, all of which feeds back into how they behave during missions. Morale and fatigue also become major considerations, especially as the stakes increase deeper into the wasteland.
It gives the whole experience a bit of a personal edge, more so than many mech-focused strategy games, especially since the mechs themselves can always be rebuilt. Of course, your pilots can’t.
Build The Perfect Machine
Players can collect mech parts, swap components, unlock new frames and carefully balance factors like armour, ammunition and heat management to create the ideal war machine for their preferred playstyle.
Given the harsh world and permanent consequences attached to your crew, there’s a heavy emphasis on preparation and long-term planning alongside the flashy anime combat sequences.
Sound good? You’ll find that NITRO GEN OMEGA is available now on Xbox Series X|S via the Xbox Store, PC, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch for ÂŁ24.99. There is Play Anywhere support if you need it as well.
