A flame-wielding side-scrolling platformer? Nocturnal probably doesn’t need much more to sell itself.Â
Coming from Sunnyside Games and their friends at Dear Villagers (they recently behind Edge of Eternity), Nocturnal will launch on PC and console later in the spring, as players get given the opportunity to take in an action exploration odyssey, tasked with repelling the mist which has covered an ancient isle. You’ll do that by using fire!
It focuses on Ardeshir, a soldier of the Enduring Flame who has returned home to Nahran after a troublesome journey across a vast sea. He finds the isle engulfed in a shadowy mist, left to rely on fire to extinguish the sinister forces that have overtaken the land.
In fact, you’ll find that the power of the flame has many uses here. It can ward off the Mist, ignite the scenery, turn on machinery, and even be used to burn beings of dark magic impervious to conventional weaponry. The problem is, you cannot breathe in the Mist, so you’ll have to use your wits as you intuit new ways to keep it at bay.
“With Nocturnal we wanted to combine the immediacy and timelessness of classic platforming adventures with a more modern dynamism,” said Sunnyside Games co-founder Gabriel Sonderegger. “The flames and mist give players a neat balance of oscillating between feeling weak and oppressed, with fleeting moments of triumph as they engulf their weapons in fire. We think it adds a unique flow to a classic genre and look forward to everyone being able to play Nocturnal when it launches later this year.”
“We love classic side-scrollers with a new twist and Nocturnal hit that nail on the head for us,” said Guillaume Jamet, Head of Publishing for Dear Villagers. “It’s often fast and frenetic, while also offering a healthy dose of tense pressure as your flame extinguishes, and you’re being attacked by dark forces in the shadows. It’s fantastic!”Â
You’ll do well to take in the announcement trailer for Nocturnal – even only as it looks flipping glorious. From there, hold tight for news in regards its spring release on PC (wishlist on Steam if you like) and consoles. We’ll bring it to you.Â
