Gothic Remake – now on Xbox, PlayStation, PC

Some games help define a genre. Others quietly build a cult following that refuses to fade away, no matter how many years pass. Gothic? Yeah, that belongs in both camps.

More than two decades after the original RPG first threw players into the brutal confines of the Colony, Gothic 1 Remake is finally here, bringing one of the most influential open-world role-playing experiences of the early 2000s to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation and PC.

For long-time fans, it’s a return to a world they know all too well. For newcomers, it’s a chance to discover why Gothic remains such a beloved name in RPG circles.

At A Glance

  • Game: Gothic 1 Remake
  • Developer: Alkimia Interactive
  • Publisher: THQ Nordic
  • Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation, PC
  • Price: ÂŁ49.99
  • Genre: Open-World RPG

Welcome To The Colony

The Kingdom of Myrtana is locked in a desperate war against invading orcs, and magical ore is the key to survival. To keep production flowing, prisoners are sent into the mines of Khorinis, trapped beneath a magical barrier designed to ensure nobody escapes. Then everything goes wrong.

The barrier expands beyond control, sealing not just the prisoners inside, but the guards and mages as well. With the kingdom suddenly unable to enforce its authority, the inmates seize power, carving the Colony into a lawless territory ruled by rival factions.

Into this chaos steps the Nameless Hero – a seemingly insignificant prisoner whose arrival will change everything.

More Than A Visual Upgrade

While Gothic 1 Remake faithfully follows the foundations laid by the 2001 original, this isn’t simply a fresh coat of paint slapped onto an old game.

Alkimia Interactive has rebuilt the experience from the ground up, modernising combat, expanding questlines, improving traversal systems and adding greater depth to the world itself. NPCs continue to live their own lives, following daily routines whether you’re paying attention to them or not.

That living-world design was one of Gothic’s defining features back in the day, and it remains one of its most distinctive qualities now. The Colony doesn’t exist for the player. The player simply happens to exist within it.

Choose Your Path

As before, survival often depends on who you decide to trust.

Three rival factions offer different opportunities, abilities and story paths, allowing players to shape their character and approach to the game. Whether you choose diplomacy, brute force or something in between, the decisions you make influence how your journey unfolds.

Combined with more than 50 hours of content, countless secrets and a sprawling world packed with danger, Gothic 1 Remake aims to deliver the kind of RPG experience that rewards exploration rather than rushing players from objective marker to objective marker.

A Legend Reborn

The RPG landscape has, quite obviously, changed dramatically since Gothic first launched in 2001, but its influence can still be felt in countless open-world adventures that followed.

Now, with modern visuals, enhanced systems and the same gritty atmosphere that made the original memorable, Gothic 1 Remake gets a second chance to introduce itself to a whole new generation of players. Whether you’re revisiting the Valley of Mines or entering the Colony for the very first time, one thing remains certain: life behind the Barrier has never been easy.

Gothic 1 Remake is available now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S (Xbox Store), PlayStation and PC for ÂŁ49.99. Unfortunately, Gothic 1 Remake is not on Game Pass at launch. But fear not, our review is on the way.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore. Gamertag is neil363, feel free to add me to your list.
