A Cult Classic Returns
Back in 2002, Destroy All Monsters Melee earned a passionate following thanks to its simple but hugely entertaining formula – drop giant monsters into major cities and let them fight it out while everything around them crumbles.
That core experience remains intact in the remaster. Players will once again take control of some of Godzilla’s most iconic foes and allies, battling across sprawling urban arenas while causing as much destruction as possible along the way. Tokyo and San Francisco are among the locations confirmed so far, with buildings, landmarks and city blocks becoming weapons as much as scenery.
Rebuilt For Modern Hardware
Rather than simply applying a fresh coat of paint, Pipeworks has rebuilt the game using Unreal Engine 5.
The studio says the remaster maintains 99% mechanical fidelity to the original release while dramatically upgrading visuals, performance and presentation. The result should preserve the feel of the classic while giving it the scale and spectacle modern hardware can provide.
Alongside enhanced graphics, players can expect online matchmaking, support for modern controller haptics and a streamlined unlock system designed to reduce some of the grind found in older releases.
“Destroy All Monsters Melee was such an important title for the genre, allowing players to destroy the environment around them, even picking up and throwing buildings, while battling as their favorite monster,” said Lindsay Gupton, CEO of Pipeworks. “Our team had the unique opportunity to revisit our work using more modern development tools and we’ve created a release that fulfills our original vision.”
“There is a real sense of responsibility that comes with working on Godzilla, especially with a fan-favorite title like Destroy All Monsters Melee,” said Mike Mika, Chief Creative Officer of Atari. “It is only natural that Atari, as the original publisher in 2002, would partner with Pipeworks, the original developer and kaiju experts to bring their creation back to center stage – bigger, better and more destructive than ever.”
The Ultimate Kaiju Playground
Part of what made the original so memorable was the roster of legendary monsters, each with their own special attacks, strengths and fighting styles.
Godzilla, Mechagodzilla and other fan favourites will once again clash in battles where strategy often takes a back seat to absolute mayhem. Whether you’re launching opponents through buildings, smashing city blocks to pieces or simply trying to become the last monster standing, the focus remains firmly on over-the-top destruction.
For longtime fans, it’s a chance to revisit one of the most beloved Godzilla games ever made. For newcomers, it could be the perfect introduction to a series that helped define kaiju gaming for an entire generation.
November Can’t Come Soon Enough
There’s been no shortage of Godzilla appearances across games over the years, but few have achieved the cult status of Destroy All Monsters Melee. The combination of accessible combat, massive monsters and wonderfully destructive arenas has kept fans talking about it for more than twenty years. Now, with Atari and Pipeworks reuniting to bring the game back, players won’t have long to wait before stepping into the scales of the King of the Monsters once again.
